StonyBrook ABSN: Class of 2021

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all,

Thought I'd start a thread here so we can connect. I am in the process of taking my pre-reqs and plan to submit my application by the Oct 2019 deadline for the Summer 2020 start.

I'm planning on attending the Sept 19 info session on campus - anyone else going?

Hi there - I was wondering if someone could clarify how Stony Brook manages clinicals. Do the nursing students need to find their own clinical placements, or does Stony Brook help match the students with the clinical placement locations? How independent do the students need to be regarding clinical placement.

Thanks!

@Lmel. The SON handles all clinical placements. At the beginning of the semester, students are sent the clinical schedule that includes all clinical rotations for the semester. The only thing students have to do is make sure all your forms are submitted so you are cleared to attend clinical.

Thanks so much, @TY112! This is super helpful info.

May I ask how far you and others live in Queens? I'd be looking at a pretty far commute, so I'm wondering if it's not worth staying in Queens. On that note, did anyone move closer to SBU and find roommates from the program?

Hi @goldnr Can you share what you ended up doing? Commuting or moving closer? I'm in a similar situation and I'm unsure what to do if I am accepted (interviewing next month). Your insight would be so appreciated!

Hi all.

I know most of you must have already completed your ABSN at SBU so I'm hoping you can help provide some insight. I have been newly accepted and would like information from first hand sources.

-Were classes held in person or online? What was the class schedule like?

-How often were clinicals and where were they held? How far east on the island could one end up having to commute? Did anyone commute from Queens?

Thanks in advance for any advise. I'm torn between 2 schools at the moment and would appreciate any info.

Hi! Congrats on your acceptance!!

- yes we were online for the entire program. The Summer schedule is intense and you won’t have much free time. The fall and Spring schedule are more manageable, but doable.

-in the Summer you have clinicals once a week. In the fall it gets a little crazy with clinicals as you will have peds, psych, & med surg clinicals, but it varied per person at what point in the semester you had each clinical. For some people, they overlapped while for others they were a little more spread out. I believe most clinicals were at stony Brook hospital or at least near stony Brook due to covid.. not sure if this has changed for the current students. I think some people had clinicals at the stony Brook hospital Southampton location. There were definitely a few people that commuted from queens, but I can see it becoming difficult because any free time is crucial for studying and you will have quite the commute. It is doable though!
Good luck!!

This was extremely insightful. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. If you don't mind me asking, how has nursing been for you since graduating? Was it easy for you to find employment and are you satisfied with your salary? Do you think attending another school might have helped you at all in any way?
