StonyBrook ABSN: Class of 2021

Published

Hi all,

Thought I'd start a thread here so we can connect. I am in the process of taking my pre-reqs and plan to submit my application by the Oct 2019 deadline for the Summer 2020 start.

I'm planning on attending the Sept 19 info session on campus - anyone else going?

You’re not the only crazy one. I don’t drive either but plan to live in campus and uber/hitchhike/carpool or use a public transportation for clinicals. Some way somehow.

hmmm, you think it would be cheaper to live on campus?

Honestly, no. But I don’t know anyone, and the Schomburg apartment seem to be the cheapest if you look online. Based on past threads our clinicals may start at Stonybrook which I can take the shuttle and walk to the hospital. After that semester is over I will have to uber or carpool. It’s crazy bc I was an EMT and looks like you were too, but somehow we got away with it bc I was always in the back with the pt.

You will be in a clinical group with 7 other students. There are opportunities to carpool with people in your group.

You should also look into Chapin

For the summer, everyone in the ABP program had clinical at stony brook hospital, but for the fall, clinical sites are scattered across the island. Some of my classmates had clinical at the Nassau Queens border. There are also clinical sites at Riverhead, the eastern end of the island.

There is an option to have your med surg rotations exclusively at SBU but other clinical rotations can be off-campus.

Thank you for the info.

I would wait to figure out housing. When you sign up for clinicals and they place you, they do their best to make it convenient. Although it doesn't always work out that way. A friend of mine in a previous year had all the clinicals in one location!

Does anyone who may have attended Stony Brook know much about the Chapin apartments? Are one bedroom apartments in that building exclusively for students with families? Or could a single student rent out the apartment for themselves? Their website doesn’t make this overly clear.

Yes, I saw that too! I was just wondering because it has one bedroom apartment in Chapin listed as “family housing.” So I want sure if just a single student with no kids or partner would be eligible for one! Also, it’s graduate housing and technically the ABSN is still an undergraduate program

I am interested in the Chapins apartment too, bc its so close to the hospital (when you look at the map). The only way to find out is to call on Tuesday.
