Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ...

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

update: got waitlisted, still hoping to get in... im taking the Group Theory course that the school of nursing is offering in the summer, hopefully will have a greater chance of getting in... ='(

im with ya girl.. waitlisted! it sucks soooooooooooo much! i wanted to go to stony brook so bad but i got into 2 other schools, one i dont really want to go to bc its an associates program, and one is in brooklyn so i would be commuting.. anyway its so hard to arrange for what im going to decide on, when i'm hoping stony brook will call me. in fact they told me on the phone that they can call all the way up to the first day of classes. it's just not right to leave people hanging like this. they said people accept their acceptance letter thing on solar but don't show up to orientation.. if your not gonna go to SB why not just let them know earlier so they can take people on the waitlist! so frustrating. i have my fingers crossed for us.

Nothin' new around these parts. I'm trying to work my hospital contacts (where I volunteer) to get a job there. It's funny when I went in for my shift at the hospital last week, I was talking to one of the nurses and she asked me what I wanted to go to school for. I told her I'm planning to go for my second degree in nursing. She suggested I go to school to be a physician's assistant because "nursing isn't all it's cracked up to be". I was thinking, that's not very encouraging but none the less I did a little research on it and maybe that's something else I can consider for next year along with reapplying to nursing school.

Yeah, more than likely you spoke to the wrong nurse on the wrong day! Definitely speak to as many nurses as possible, don't let one bad apple change your mind about things! That is what I did. I certainly got more positives than negatives. PA programs are not for me, I just don't want to spend that much more time in school right now. Very happy to be completing this program in one year, and getting to work thereafter. I will pursue grad school later if I desire. Time is just not my friend right now - but very happy nonetheless in my plan. But if you can afford to invest the time and determined you could be happy doing PA, by all means go for it!

This should be my first weekend of significant packing. I expect to see some progress by Sunday night. Cross your fingers!

Regarding the accelerated nursing program. when is the next deadline? I still see the old deadline for fall 2011 on their website. I assume next class is for fall 2012 right, cuz its once a year entry? is the application available?

The accelerated program always starts in June, so the next entering class is Summer 2012. The next deadline (assuming everything is the same) should be Nov. 1, 2011. Application is made available online in early Sept.

I'm currently in the RN/BSN program at Stony Brook. I'm a new nurse with very limited work experiece. I became an RN in 2009 when the hospital job freeze occurred. It was terrible, the only jobs available were in nursing homes if you were lucky.Those who were in the system working as CNA's in a hospital got hired much quicker as RNs. I got shut out of everything. The only thing to really do was go back to school, which I didn't want to do. I got accepted even with practically no experience. What did make the difference was that I had prevoius degrees, a bachelors and an associates. This I have noticed had made the difference into being accepted, into the RN program (fiercely competitive)and Stony Brook program as well. It was strange that the majority accepted had a bachelors from another school.This is not 100%, there were those with assoc and limited experience as well. Stony Brook just accepted a bumper crop of students(120) for the RN/BSN progam for the Fall 2010 program. Their not doing that again, too much stress for the professors with 60 students each.One of my professors dropped before the semester and we got stuck with a real winner. For the Fall 2011 they are cutting back to 45 students (the Dean told me) and it 's going to be that much harder to get in. Remember, the economy sucks and alot of people are going back to school and there are only so many seats. Now, without a bachelors or hospital experience it is difficult out there, job wise. Just remember when one door closes another one opens up.

For anyone who is still on the waitlist for this program, just wanted to pass along that it seems 2 of the originally accepted students have since decided to attend elsewhere, and I know of 1 other person still on the fence. There may be more, who knows - but these are the numbers I know of so far.

A glimmer of hope for those of you still grabbing onto the rope! Good luck!

Paco- you still get all the 411! I love it! I have not been on this thread since a little bit after I was rejected for the 2 year BSN program. I am waitlisted for the one year and wanted to see if anyone was called off list, and low and behold, you come through with some info! I clearly know it doesn't mean I am in, but interesting that you know of these people who are not going. DId they let SB know yet? If so, does any person out ther who came off wait list know if SB calls as soon as they are notified? I was accepted into SCCC and am ok with it, bc it is a spot. However, to earn a BS in one year as opposed to an AS in two years would be the way to go!!! WOW!

I know of two students personally through Facebook that have chosen to go to other schools. The other one I found out through email, as this student inadvertently hit Reply All to an email from the school when she should have just hit Reply.
