Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

lisatoronto- I'm searching for a place to take Chem again because I need a better grade, i'm not sure the class # would mean anything to you seeing as how the numbers vary from school to school. (for example i took chem151 with a lab and that was general chemistry 1) Thanks anyway, i'm just going to have to try and call again because Stony Brook is a bit of drive to come in and ask one question. That would be a last resort :)

If it's general chemistry it should be ok. As to where you should retake it, they accept credits from Farmingdale, Suffolk CC and Nassau CC...hope that helps...I know this because I attended an information session and was given the transfer credit equivalent sheet. Hope this helps!

hi everyone ... so nice to see the thread is active with more members, welcome! :) i just submitted my application earlier this weekend, it's done :D .. so now it's all about waiting :uhoh3: ... and we all know how that's like, i am having deja-vu of course, this being my 2nd try for sb. i did fax in to sb unofficial copies of my transcripts (for the ones they said they had not yet received) ... and the fax went through so for me that's going to be my peace of mind, it just has to be, not going to call them anymore, i will just wait to obsess through solar now once i have access, lol.

lisa_toronto, glad to hear that i have been of help! hope you are able to get through this all in one piece. i kind of wish i was not in a position to share my experience as someone who was waitlisted and never ultimately accepted, but if it helps someone then i am ok with that!

erinmc0783, i actually don't know which gpa is used by sb in the application process, the overall one or just the prereqs. i am applying to 2 other schools and they each use a different gpa. last year, i was only missing micro when i applied but i have since completed it. if we're going by prereq gpa, i have a 4.0 but if it's overall, i am probably more @ 3.4 ... i know recommendations and essays are taken into account too! in fact, if this helps, i remember reading somewhere that someone who had a 3.2 gpa in their first bachelor's program got in. not sure how long ago that was though. i seem to remember that there are 60 seats in the accelerated program, though not completely sure.

zee09, not familiar with enough info to answer your chem question, my assumption is that if the class you took already had a lab component (4 credits), i don't see why it would not be ok. but as lisa suggested, you might want to go over there and ask with course descriptions in hand. i would hate to take over a class i did not have to, particularly chem!

deadline is looming, get your applications in! good luck, folks!

as for the gpa, they said that yes it is important, but they have a range of students that have high and low gpas...honestly, what really counts is your science and math cumulative gpa, recommendation letters and most importantly your personal statement.

yes there is 60 seats available for the accelerated...but for both programs they may have more available seats; apparently it depends on funding.

Paco69-I know you applied already but I hope you included somewhere in your essay/application that you are applying for the 2nd time. I was told at the session that they try to be "sensitive" to the fact that you have applied more than once and take that into consideration.

Ack! I did not mention it in my essay (so focused on answering the questions) but I did indicate it in my application where it asked if I had applied before and I indicated yes, summer 2010. I hope that was enough!

I also applied to drexel and binghamton but stony is my top choice, which do u guys think is the best program not taking into account tuition?

I would have applied to Binghamton, but I was deterred by the fact that their website says that the chemistry courses have to be "two semesters in general chemistry including principles of inorganic, organic and biochemistry." I really don't know what that meant in terms of the chemistry I took, I don't think mine covered anything involving organic or biochem. I should have just asked, but I never found the time to call or write to them. Oh well. I was in fact accepted to Drexel this summer for Spring 2010 and I was planning to defer to Fall 2010, but the cost was prohibitive. I got my financial aid award letter and it was a clear dealbreaker. I intend on going on to eventually do grad work for NP and I don't want to be saddled with more debt for a 2nd bachelors than I already am. But clearly, out of the 3 I do believe Stony Brook is the best one.

I would have applied to the 2 year program too, but I guess you could say that I am a little anxious about starting and getting done as soon as possible. Considering that by this time I was hoping to be already halfway through an accelerated program and the fact that I am already in my early 40s, you could say I am getting a little impatient! :o

To Lisa_Toronto- I took General Chemistry at Suffolk CC this Summer, I don't know if this is commutable to you but if it is I highly recommend it. I went to SUNY Cortland to receive my bachelors in Health Science and although it is an accredited and becoming much more competitive I can say with confidence that Stony Brook is far more competitive just by being in the health center everyday and seeing the courseload the students take on. Taking it at Suffolk is much, much easier than it would be taking it here and although the school can sometimes feel like an immature atmosphere it gets the job done in satisfying the prereq. In high school I had to take chemistry twice because for some reason I have never been able to grasp much of it but received a B+ in the class over the Summer.

Being that it is one of the core prereqs having a strong grade in the class will surely better your chances so by all means sign up! ha ha

I submitted my application last week and to anyone who has applied before, I know they only require 3 letters of rec but I decided one of my recommenders was not as strong of a reference as someone else I could have asked as a 3rd SBUH employee. I added another letter any idea if they only read the first 3 or if the extra one cant hurt? I am really stressing

this program and the 2 year since I catered all my undergraduate credits towards it :uhoh21: .

I forgot who asked about what they look for in the essay but as they said "pour your heart out" and also really reallyyyy enforce how you feel education is crucial to being a health care professional. I know the dean of the nursing program Dr. Xippolitos and she can not speak enough about how important she feels education is. Stony Brook is actually now only accepting RN's with a BSN and those who already work here for X amount of years will be grandfathered into the policy but at everyyy meeting they talk about how important they feel education is.

I understand. I'm 29 years old and am anxious as well. Best of luck. I'm sure this time you will have no problems. Have faith and keep positive!

Unfortunately I am already taking it at Stony Brook...it's very challenging! But thank you very much for thinking about me! :)

It was I who had asked about the essay! Thanks for the heads up!!

lisa_toronto - I went to an info session as well and have the transfer credit sheet also. The schools on there are all in LI and too far of commute for me to take one class. I'm not sure you understand my question but thanks anyway, I'll figure it out.

Paco69- I'm sure they will see that on your application. Hopefully that means they will take you into special consideration :)

Right now, I only have 2 of the 5 pre-reqs done but in a month at the end of this quarter, I will have 3 of the 5 pre-reqs done (with chem and the last of 3 quarters of my A&P series). I hope they consider my application still. Does anyone know if they're somewhat lenient about having 3 of 5 pre-reqs done at the time of application? I have an excellent GPA overall as well as just science classes. I wish I could fast forward to when we find out!!!

I know others who were accepted last year with outstanding prereqs (were finishing in the spring) ... so if you have an otherwise strong application, I believe you have a good chance.

The obsession with checking SOLAR was obscene last year, LOL ... :lol2: ... I hope I don't get like that again. End of January is when most of us found out, keep that in mind. I know, and we still have to get through the holidays knowing that ...

Since I go to bing now I just went to there advising and they told me my chem was fine, I think any chem that was required for stony would've been acceptable but I'm not sure. I agree that stonybrook is probably the best but I have heard many good things about bing (I think it's detriment is the lack of excellent hospitals in the area whereas long island has plenty). Did u apply to any others besides drexel and stonybrook?

How long did it take you all to get your SOLAR ID after submitting the application? I just submitted today and was hoping to check the status of my transcripts (which were sent weeks ago). Thanks

I am also applying to 3 schools in FL, where I currently reside. Stony Brook is the only school I applied to in NY, I would like to go back to my home state :) but that is the only school that seems to be the one I am willing to attend. I did consider Binghamton but did not apply due to that chemistry thing and I should have looked into it more. Buffalo would have also been good but they require patho as a prereq and no one around here offers that, besides I was not going to take one course like that for one school. Downstate is another one I considered but I am not liking that program. Notice all of these are state schools, trying to stay away from the private $$$ ones, even though I will be nonresident it will still be cheaper at state schools.

I still have my old emails from last year. It took about 2 days after submission for me to get my SOLAR ID. I actually know my SOLAR ID, it should be the same as last year. Will try logging in again and see what happens.
