Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Paco- Im sure they have yours as well! actually a few hours after i called them i checked my solar account and it was was all there! YAY! saved me gas and 22 dollars. I think the reason why they found it so fast was because Monday i called saying how i submitted my application Friday however i still have yet to recieve my solar account ID and i would just like to know if it has arrived or not inorder for me to resubmit again. A lady called back (however i was at work and couldnt pick up ) saying to leave my full name spelling it out and she will let me know if it was found, So i left a msg after work ( which the office was already closed ) but i got my solar ID the next day and the whole drama of it not arriving yet etc.. happened lol

Kristenann110- Hey welcome! your story sounds like mine =) i actually was just waiting for 1 rec. as well however i was having such a hard time finding out the status of my transcript and after calling about 3 times being told i can submit my application while im still waiting for a reccomendation i finally did it in hopes to finally find out if my transcripts has arrived lol

So... i was reading old threads about the SB acc. program and it just made me even more nervous.. from what i read acceptance/rejection letters normally come out january T_T

I knoww so many January stories! I cant wait that long! haha Im stressing because I catered all my undergrad pre-reqs when I switched from special ed to health science for Stony Brooks program so I really can only qualify for stony brooks 1 yr or the 2 yr so its cutting it close to the wire whether or not I have an academic future next year! :uhoh3: However I did read a good amount of mid-decembers and I heard from a lot of people that the SOLAR account thing is a big hint/heads up if u get that "new student" tab then that generally means ur accepted and if not you may have been wait listed or rejected that should be up hopefully by December!

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site. I have been reading lots of info here for months so I figured I should finally join. I am applying to the ABSN program for 2011 as well as their 2 year program. I need to get in! I recently attended an info session at Stony Brook which was helpful. I'm going to be retaking Chemistry. Does anyone know if only General Chemistry is accepted? Or is College Chem also accepted which is also considered general at alot of schools but is geared towards students studying in the healthcare field. At the info session I was sure the guy speaking (who is the program director) said those kinds of chem are ok. I called just to double check before I actually sign up and start paying for a class and the person I spoke to said it needs to be a general chem class. College Chem also teaches general chem though so now im not sure. I'd rather not take general chemistry again if I don't have to, can anyone help with this??

Hi all, I'm new to this. But I have been reading up on all of your posts and understand how stressful this whole process is. I am currently a Stony Brook student (international student) and i'm almost done my prereqs for the 2year BSN program and I am going crazy over this essay! Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that according to ********* (Assistant to the Dean of Admissions) it takes a while for documents to be processed. So have no fear!!! If you sent your documents to HSC Student Services, you should be fine. I know you want to be sure that they receive it, as I am sure they have, but take in account the amount of documents that need to be processed as well. It takes some time for it to reflect on SOLAR....by the way, I HATE SOLAR!! LOL...

Anyway, if anyone has any pointers for writing the essay, I would be so grateful if you could share them with me. Thank you so very much for your time in reading this post. Have a wonderful day!

PS- Paco you are honestly a Godsend to people like me, who are unfamiliar with the application process, I thank you for your "words of wisdom"!

Which chemistry?? I took CHE129 and am now taking CHE132. It really has no directionality for health care. It is really general. As for college chem...I wouldn't recommend it. Simply because they look for the ability to handle university level classes. Taking college chem, is honestly the easy way out. Maybe you should actually walk into the school of nursing and find out for sure. I find that going in is much beneficial than calling, because they usually don't pick up! Hope this helps!

Hey everyone,

I'm also applying for Summer 2011. Paco - do you mind if i ask what your GPA was last year when you got waitlisted? Does anyone know the stats as to the number of applicants and the number accepted into the ABSN program?

Thanks and good luck everyone!!

hi everyone ... so nice to see the thread is active with more members, welcome! :) i just submitted my application earlier this weekend, it's done :D .. so now it's all about waiting :uhoh3: ... and we all know how that's like, i am having deja-vu of course, this being my 2nd try for sb. i did fax in to sb unofficial copies of my transcripts (for the ones they said they had not yet received) ... and the fax went through so for me that's going to be my peace of mind, it just has to be, not going to call them anymore, i will just wait to obsess through solar now once i have access, lol.

lisa_toronto, glad to hear that i have been of help! hope you are able to get through this all in one piece. i kind of wish i was not in a position to share my experience as someone who was waitlisted and never ultimately accepted, but if it helps someone then i am ok with that!

erinmc0783, i actually don't know which gpa is used by sb in the application process, the overall one or just the prereqs. i am applying to 2 other schools and they each use a different gpa. last year, i was only missing micro when i applied but i have since completed it. if we're going by prereq gpa, i have a 4.0 but if it's overall, i am probably more @ 3.4 ... i know recommendations and essays are taken into account too! in fact, if this helps, i remember reading somewhere that someone who had a 3.2 gpa in their first bachelor's program got in. not sure how long ago that was though. i seem to remember that there are 60 seats in the accelerated program, though not completely sure.

zee09, not familiar with enough info to answer your chem question, my assumption is that if the class you took already had a lab component (4 credits), i don't see why it would not be ok. but as lisa suggested, you might want to go over there and ask with course descriptions in hand. i would hate to take over a class i did not have to, particularly chem!

deadline is looming, get your applications in! good luck, folks!

lisatoronto- I'm searching for a place to take Chem again because I need a better grade, i'm not sure the class # would mean anything to you seeing as how the numbers vary from school to school. (for example i took chem151 with a lab and that was general chemistry 1) Thanks anyway, i'm just going to have to try and call again because Stony Brook is a bit of drive to come in and ask one question. That would be a last resort :)

Paco69/erinmc0783- At the info session I went to earlier this month (which was led by the program director) they said they use an average of all transcripts submitted. The minimum GPA is a 2.8 for the ABSN. They will not round, even if you have a 2.79 you will not be considered. The average GPA of students in the program is about a 3.4 but students with the minimum GPA also got into the program.

He said about 90% of the people who apply are qualified but don't get in because there just isn't enough room. It was a bit discouraging but I like that he was being honest. There's about 500-600 applicants but about 64 seats available.

Hope that was helpful. Good luck everyone!

lisa_toronto- the advice they gave at the info session about the essay was to "pour your heart out". Any healthcare related job, experience, or volunteer position should be included. Also obviously make sure you answer all the questions that are supposed to be addressed in the essay. Take this opportunity to sell yourself, remember you are trying to stand out from the rest!

Paco69-I know you applied already but I hope you included somewhere in your essay/application that you are applying for the 2nd time. I was told at the session that they try to be "sensitive" to the fact that you have applied more than once and take that into consideration.
