ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ...
but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).
anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?
One thing I was told about recommendations: make sure they come from people who can speak to your potential success in a nursing program and ultimately as a practicing nurse. That said, recommendations from professors that have taught you in a demanding science prerequisite (particularly if you got an A) and someone who has seen you working in a medical environment with patients uwould be in the best position to write these letters about you. In hindsight, the letter I submitted last year from a director who has observed my managerial skills in a non-nursing industry, though glowing I am sure, probably did not offer what the committee was looking for. I am hoping the group I picked this year can give them a better picture of my potential.
meh... the visit wasnt that helpful... i talked to this lady at the reception and she basically was telling me that everything (application, recommendations, essays, transcripts, and fees) needs to be submitted twice and that I dont need different recommendations and essay i can just re-submit the same ones online. And make sure your recommenders are sending it twice too! For the transcript part, I can just pick it up and send it myself or bring it in.
She said they don't do one-on-one advisement... but the very next info session is november 19... i guess thats geared for the basic program applicants since the 1 yr deadline is nov 2...
and she gave me a bunch of information sheets which i can download from the website...
hmm so there isnt an info sessions for the aBSN program? im gonna try to go on one of the campus tours i believe i can take the train there.. because driving there it seems i have to go thru manhattan which is no bueno lol.
I went to my old school today because my old prof. im getting a reccomendation from asked me to come in during his office hours so we can catch up. To make a long story short His office hours was 2- 3:30 i wen there twice and he wasnt there.. and i was informed he left earlier than what his office hours stated. i was a bit dissapointed he wasnt there but atleast i was able to check to make sure they sent my official transcript. i guess ill come back monday.
OO i did call the nursing department today asking about the transcripts with the 2 pre-req im currently finishing atm. The woman said that as long as its specfied in the application that its still in process and since its my 1st semester in the community college then i dont need to send it as part of the complete application. I guess once the course is over then you can mail the transcript in.
in better news i finally finished my essay ! so its just the whole waiting game for reccomendations. i just want to submit it already! i cant believe its almost october >.

campus tour doesnt really do much lol i assume that ur going from NJ? if u are then u gotta look at both nj transit(?) and LIRR schedules.... i would drive rather than take the train cuz trains run on schedules... if you miss a train ur gonna have to wait a long time...
i think they did have some sort of info session for the aBSN... they might have had one like in the summer but i guess we missed it? maybe these are for next year aBSN applicants... shouldve planned wayyyyy ahead = (
the lady did say that you only need to have 3 out of 5 prereqs completed to apply. the other two can be in progress, as long as u finish it by the program start date ur fine. I'm gonna send my transcripts with courses in progress and then send it again when the grades come out... dont wanna screw up my application because of couple of bucks... >
2 recommendations down! and 1 more to go... my boss wants me to send her an email telling her what I want her to write about or emphasize... any idea? would leadership skills, dedication, and professionalism be a good combination? jeez... i still have to work on my esssayyyy and i have microbio midterm in 2 days... >
Thankfully ALL my recommendations show as submitted ... all I have left to finish is my essay *sigh* ... the thorn in my side, lol .... I can't wait to get this over with already!
Not sure how your boss is supposed to address the recommendation actually. My instinct tells me that she should talk about how prepared you are to enter the nursing profession and your potential as a future leader in nursing? She should use clear examples of what you have done to back these statements up too. Just saying you are good at this and excellent at that does not really hold much weight without illustration.

yeah im coming from NJ... ill see how the driving goes there im not the best driver ever.. and i tend to get lost alot hahaha
my recommendations is still 0 which makes me nervous.. =.= i know the director of nursing she is almost done but i have yet to see the other prof... im gonna make it a priority monday.. i will stalk him if i have to! October is a crazy busy month for me.. im helping plan a bachlorette and a engagment party this month and the wedding im bridemaid to is next month. So im broke which makes me want to work more but i need time to study. Im taking the intro to sociology clep exam and my 2nd anp2 exam 2 weeks from now. Im starting to feel quite overwhlemed but this application is on the top of my list. I feel like once i get this done i can breathe a little better.
I was looking around on what they would want to see on rec. letters and #6 post - How to write a reference letter for student? - Nursing for Nurses
they wrote something employers would be looking for in referance letters. i know its different but it points out good views for the most part maybe it can help! btw good luck on your midterm!
Definitely make the recommendations a priority, before you know it the deadline will arrive and you're scrambling. Last year I had one recommender submit her recommendation the day before the deadline, which is the same day I submitted my application (Oct 31) - and I had asked her for the recommendation back in early Sept! Needless to say, I am not using her again, lol! At least now, I have full control of my application being that the essay is all I have left to finish. My goal is to submit the application a week before Nov 1 at the latest, depending on how quickly I can get through this essay. I hate that feeling of a looming deadline when you have things out there you can't control. So this year I am a little calmer than last.
Hope your transcripts are all in by now!!! They should either be @ SB already or on their way.

I probably going to end up submitting my application really close to the deadline ( i hope not ) =.=
I have 1 done so far which is the director or nursing at my job. I talked to both prof. this week im getting recommendations and im quite happy they told me ill get a really good one from them but my problem is the time. I told them it was due nov. 1. One of them old me that not to worry it will be done i just need to call every week to check up and that sometimes he just needs that push... can i give the push every day? lol I just hate the fact that for this application to finish it isnt in my hands its my profs. lol =((
sometimes when i study ill space out and just wonder if they are working on my recommendation lol ahh this is killing me! it was hard enough to choose which prof. to ask since i was never the girl who really stood out in class i was just average who did averagly good lol
Is there any way we can check if our trasncripts arrive? i guess ill give a call them a call in the am.
hope all your applications are going along smoothly!

I know, I think this is why I decided to do things differently this year, get recommendations from people I know would be on the ball with their stuff. One professor literally completed and submitted my recommendation the very same day I requested it from her. Saw her in the AM and by 5pm it was done! It was early in the semester, so that might have something to do with it too.

You surely don't have to be the one student that spoke up the most, but you certainy should be one that got an A in the class. The occasional question asked in class will get you noticed also. This is why I ALWAYS sit in the front row, in the professor's face, so he/she knows who I am if I end up needing a recommendation. I am by far NOT one of those annoying people in class that others get sick of hearing talk. I do my work and ask good questions every so often.

I sent SB an email about the status of my transcripts WEEKS ago, and have not received a response. I don't know if even a phone call will do any good. Let me know if you get through, I would love to know if my transcripts have arrived. I did request them sometime the first week of Sept, so I can only hope they are all there. In fact, I will try to call them now as long as I am thinking about it.
I got through to someone @ SB who alerted me that not all my transcripts have been recorded as received. I asked which ones were missing and I called those 2 schools. They both have records of these having been sent in mid-Sept. One of them was nice enough to resend a copy just in case. The other one just said it could be "the mail." Now I will have to keep tabs on all this ... hopefully this will all be resolved by the deadline.

Hey dr3amygirl!
do tell us how the visit goes tomorrow! and if you learned any new information.
I actually wanted to contact them asking how they will precede with my application with my anp classes still in process. I know for UMDNJ they wanted an updated from the prof. how the student is doing in class.
As for the transcripts im not really sure since i requested both of mine to be sent out. However, one of the options when requesting an official transcript was student picking it up. I guess it never hurts to ask right?
for reccomendations, i actually debating if i should ask my boss for medical records to do one... the director or nursing was more than happy to write me one however, she told me she has never done one before and didnt know how to write one. (im the youngest one at work so this whole asking for a reccomendation thing is prob. new to them) Im kind of scared that it wont sound as professional. Therefore, im debating now if i should ask my old genetics prof. or Biology prof. to write my 3rd one.
