ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ...
but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).
anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?
Had a depressing realization yesterday ... I noticed I might be paying as much to attend SBU as I would a private university since I am out of state. I did the math. Not going to make rash conclusions or decisions just yet but something to think about. The FL schools I am awaiting to hear from suddenly look more attractive. Let's see ...

That surprises me...your private schools must be cheap because most are like 50k. I thought the SBU tuition for out of state was around 20-25k?

The 2 private schools from which I have declined offers are @ $39K for tuition alone for the whole program ... and I calculated preliminary numbers that show for me SBU may be close to that too. Not exact numbers, mind you ... but ballpark (I just used the per credit amt x 69 credits in the program to figure it out, but perhaps it is a bit less). If I had been in-state for at least a year I would be a resident again. One of these schools I declined had no options for fin aid other than all loans, and the other had a nice scholarship option but I found out later I would have to pay a deposit to attend school before even knowing about the scholarship. Does not work for me. The state schools in FL however that I am still waiting to hear from are @ $7K tuition because I am a resident. So, let's see what options I have. Hopefully SBU gives nice fin aid incentives.

I have a friend who is currently in the program and she mentioned that they give almost nothing in terms of financial aid.

It's nowhere near that expensive. I'm out of state. Tuition is about $26,000 from start to finish, including health insurance.
If you already have a degree, as you will if you are applying to the one year, you get limited government loans. Independent students get $12,000, and dependents get $7000 and their parents can apply for PLUS loans (or, if they apply and get rejected, the student receives an additional $5000).
erinmc: There are several people who are separated from their significant others in the program. Some have split, some stay together. Ultimately, you have to decide whether you want to put your relationship through that much stress, because it will definitely be stressful!

We can only hope. The thing is: even though we are weaving through a tight job market right now, there ARE jobs out there and there are some new grads getting jobs too. It's not 100% impossible, it's just a matter of beating the odds. I am not losing hope.
