Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Hi Paco,

I had replied but forgot to address it to you...sorry...pls see my sep post.

I just realized you wrote "FSU Tampa" and I guess you meant to say USF, no? Dang acronyms, LOL!! Two different schools. My reply was about USF. But since we're mentioning FSU, I did not apply there because they require patho as a prereq and that would have been the only school for which I had to take that class. I was not about to take a class just for one program. Besides, that class was not offered at the school I was taking prereqs and I was not going to go to another school to take it either. I already have to order 6 transcripts when I apply to each school!

LOL, yes I meant USF! It would be a long shot desperate move for me to apply there, but if this weather continues...

The groundhog did not see his shadow- that is good news!

I sometimes wonder why I want to leave the Sunshine State and return to Long Island :D ... but I would do it for Stony Brook hands down. I did my undergrad on Long Island and I have come to miss it :)

Paco, this brutal winter we are having is enough to make anyone runaway. With all the snow and cold I've considered relocating more than enough times in the past couple weeks. The wait doesn't help either! I suppose I should be keeping a P.M.A (positive mental attitude)! :hrnsmlys:

Soak up all those sun-rays for those of us in the cold.

:teapot: Here's some warm tea for everyone who is feeling it too...

well, i have finally made a decision. after talking to a lot of rn's i work with they gave me the best advice ever for a working mom. i decided not to do sbu (still sad to say that) and go for the lpn program. i can still work and keep benefits for my lil man. by next july i will be done and working as a lpn. after i get settled into a job my friend told me about a program 4 others did here to get their rn. obviously you have to be an lpn first to do this. but they were accepted to excelior college (hope i spelled that correctly) which is a distant learning program. (not online). they actually send you books and study guides for each course you would need, you study at your own pace from home and then sign up for a test when you think you are ready. when you pass you move on to the next course. i am a lil ahead cause i did a&p i and ii and micro. after i passed all the tests for each course i have to go to a hospital for 2 days of clinical. that is it! then i take the rn test and i am done. i know this is real because 4 people here did it. one of the women did it in less than a year, others took their time. so i am happy to have a plan. good luck to all and i hope you all get into the program of your choice. i will be checking to see if you all get in.

good luck! it sounds like you made the best decision for you and your family. seeing how fast this past year has gone, i'm sure you'll be done with the lpn program in no time and beginning your rn studies. :nurse:

Their loss! Positivity is key, I'm sure we'll be hearing from Stony soon...

I'm wondering if everyone has heard about the proposed enormous budget cuts by the governor of NY and what they thought about it. It seems Stony Brook hospital will be getting funding cut which will mean loss of tons of hospital positions in the tri-state area as well as a tuition increase.

Central to this cut is the proposed elimination of all direct State

support - $54.8 million in operating expenses-- for Stony Brook

University Hospital. This is coupled with the complete elimination

of the $300 million capital request for the three SUNY hospitals.

Stony Brook University Hospital is the region's safety net hospital

providing services that are simply not available anywhere else in

this area. It is the major teaching hospital for the University,

helping us train thousands of health professionals in the medical,

nursing, and ancillary health services. Stony Brook University

Hospital is the major provider of trauma care for the people of

Suffolk County - in fact it is the only Level 1 trauma center in

Suffolk County, taking care of the sickest, most critically injured

patients - and the biggest provider of care for the underserved and

uninsured in this community. Together with its sister SUNY

institutions, Upstate Medical Center and Downstate Medical Center,

Stony Brook University Medical Center provides care for more than 1

million New Yorkers across the State. It is an extraordinary asset

for this region.

Unfortunately, funds for our academic enterprise have been slashed as

well. The 10% cut for SUNY proposed in the new Executive Budget will

bring the total cuts to our academic enterprise to 75 million dollars

over 3 years. Our cost per student has not changed, in fact due to

mandatory faculty and staff wage increases over the past 5 years it

has risen, so without some form of revenue relief in the form of

increased tuition, we cannot hope to maintain the same level of

educational quality, unless we significantly reduce the number of

students we serve.

On the hospital side we will work to educate our elected officials

and the public on the absolutely vital role Stony Brook University

Hospital and our academic medical center play in the quality of life

and economic vitality of Long Island. We need to be clear--a cut of

this magnitude will have an enormous impact on our region. Critical

programs are at risk, and unless these funds are restored, we may be

forced to lay off hundreds of skilled workers. No one disputes the

need for cost controls in health care, but the complete elimination

of State support to Stony Brook University Hospital, and the service

reductions, program eliminations, and lay-offs that must follow,

would be a severe blow to the people of Suffolk County and Long

Island. We need all of our constituencies, faculty, staff,

students, patients and families to speak out on this critical issue.

That was kinda scary to read, and I tried not to read too much between the lines in terms of how it would affect students in the accelerated program. I am hoping for the best, and its only a proposal at this point, no?

Trouble66, I agree - Columbia's loss ... think positive and believe that what is meant to be will happen for you!

I know Paco, it was frightening to read for myself, in terms of funding for education, and later finding a job in NY. It is only a proposal at this point, but I think by May we will find out if it passes or not. More things to worry about, why!!! :uhoh3:
