Still unemployed; Why am I not getting calls for interviews?

Published

I live in Miami, FL.

I graduated in May 2015.

Got my license end of July.

Missed application date for residency program because I got my license so late.

Since then, I've been applying to whatever position may be open.

I got one interview, and I didnt get the job.

Ive applied to 20+ positions, and havent heard back from any of them.

A residency program opened up beginning of December, and everytime i check, they have taken down the application.

They usually post it back up in a few days, but I'm afraid they wont since the deadline is supposed to be January 1st.

(i dont know why they keep taking the application down when the deadline is January 1st)

At this point, Im not sure what else to do.

Ive only applied within the area i live in.

Ive sent one or two applications to GA, and planning on sending some out to Orlando.

Any advice would help.

Thanks.

Lots of new grads these days apply to hundreds of positions before landing even an interview. I do hope you're applying to everything you see, not just hospital positions. It's a tough time right now for nurses, especially new grads, and you can't really afford to be picky with your first position.

And if you're willing to move to Georgia, then please start blanketing Georgia with applications also.

My classmates have already gotten jobs. Im the only one left out of the group of friends i graduated with that is still unemployed.

And yes, i am applying to everything i see.

Ive even called clinics, my old pediatric doctor, fertility centers... you name it.

At this point i just want a job, to gain the experience i need in order to move out to GA.

Right now, its not feasible for me to move out to GA.

I need to get my self more on my own two feet with the support of my family here in Miami before i make such a big move.

Thank you.

Ive had a nursing counselor review my resume and suggested some changes.

Thanks.

You will get a job, but it may not be your first choice. Apply any and everywhere and take what you can get. It took me and a lot of my classmates several months to get a job as well as applying for hundreds of positions.

Did you work as a nursing assistant during school? If so, network and let management know you are interested!

Can you contact people you know, former classmates, professors, friends, relatives, ANYONE whom you know that may give you a pathway to gainful employment?

Because in this tough economy, it's not just what we know, but WHO. I got several positions based on networking.

Cast that net, contact everyone who may give you lead and keep trying and following up.

Hang in there and I wish you the best.

Apply to nursing homes, private duty, home health companies, and those obscure nursing jobs that are posted on Indeed or Craigslist.

In addition, since all of your former classmates have secured employment, perhaps utilize one or more of them to help you network your way into a job. Two-thirds of all jobs in this economy are not advertised and therefore gotten through word of mouth.

Good luck to you.

I have contacted professors who work at the hospital im volunteering at, and i have spoken to my classmates at hospitals. They both tell me that the hospitals are not currently hiring anymore (it's the end of the year, new hiring starts around february, so ive been told).

Thank you.

I'll keep on applying and calling clinics and hospitals.

Thank you.

Some people seem to struggle more than others. Typically it is because they don't have healthcare experience that classmates had, a poor resume, or simply bad timing. Don't give up yet. Keep applying and make sure to make those changes to your resume. Good luck!
