I'm so excited...I am interviewing for a position providing 1:1 care in the home: many families care for their loved one during daytime hours but wishes night time respite. This so fits into my career needs right now! :)
I am so thrilled this is available in my area as I did this kind of work as a brand new nurse and really enjoyed it!
Just wanted to share my enthusiasm...this is a great option for those of us who don't want the physical and mental stress of facility work.
Of course I won't make the $$$ I was; but at this point it isn't necessary for me to bring home the big bucks. :)
One patient...sounds like a dream! LOL!!

Good luck w/ the interview process.

I presently do 1:1 for a woman on weekends - and enjoy working with her! I feel blessed that the family likes to hire nursing students (and pays them well) so the students can get experience...and the family the help they need.

Let us know how things work out.

I did it for 2 years part time with a pediatric vent case...It has its pro's and con's it was great independence, I got to learn a lot, both about nursing skills in a home setting...adapting and overcoming when your supply options are limited, and interpersonal relationships...the hard part...you become part of this family...you can get very attached, my client died this past year, he was still a teenager...The other hard part I found was being able to separate the personal from the professional...My family was very involved in the care of this child...and since you are in their home on a regular basis...and it is a home...it starts to become comfortable...almost not like a job, but a visit to good friends, that have a sick child...It did at time get a little difficult when they start inviting you to family functions, and even ask if they could leave their other child with you to run to the store real quick...It may sound like a crazy thought, but when you are there 3 days a week every week for 2 years...it doesn't seem so much a big deal anymore...exactly why its hard to remember you are there for a job as a professional and not necessarily as the family friend...It becomes hard to separate it after a while...And I tried the "Oh not me," "I'm always a professional." but its hard...but I loved every minute of my experience, good luck...

I found the job posted at the NS bulletin board. While the family uses agency staff (CNA's) for a few shifts, most of us are "solo." For me it has been an excellent opportunity to "ease" into a nursing role and gain caregiver experience, even though it is a 1:1 situation. (Not overwhelming, have time to study (depending on the day and how my client is doing).

Thanks about the "good luck" wish for schooling... I am enjoying all of it so far, feel as tho I have found my niche in the medical field: nursing. (I'm just sorry it took me so long to figure out that this is the best field for me...)

I am a ER nurse full time and do pediatric 1:1 care part time. It is a very good mix for me, but as previously said you do get attached very quikly adn it is hard to just be "the nurse". But it is very rewarding at the same time. Good luck with your new job!!!!!!

sooo true, but one of the reasons i love homecare..we never realize what an impact we make on these families lives...i have one client i have been doing respite for for about 8 years...her brother said to me last week "you are such a part of our family, B really loves it when you are here and so do I" something from a 10 yr old, huh???

Even though i maintain some boundaries. there are a few "grey areas" you just have to learn to keep some professional /client relationship rules. Good luck with your career!!!

What nice posts from everyone...thank you! Its funny how I may end my nursing career doing the same thing I did as a brand new nurse...home care 1:1.

My first job as a new LPN was a home case..a 90 yr old who fractured her hip , deconditioned and developed a bedsore in the hospital. The family took her home and hired me to get her well...and I did. It felt great too. :)

At first I did respite at night...then her family had to leave (they all lived out of state) and asked me to arrange around the clock care for her, which I did. all my new grad friends got recruited on with me! :)

This was a wealthy 'old money' family and the matriarch lived in the family mansion alone with her maid...who kept house and cooked, etc. She was ancient too...about 90...LOL! so I found myself doing lots of little things to help around the house, and the cook would make special food for me, etc..it was fun. I took them to their doc appts, gave them home perms, even took them shopping once. So I know what ya'll mean about becoming part of the family. :)

My patient taught me a lot too...she was the first woman principal of a public school as far as she knew (back in the 1890's) and she told me lots of stories of the 'olden days.' She encouraged me to invest, and prodded me to go back to school for my RN. I remember she invited my hubby over and we all made popcorn and watched a Muhammed Ali fight..she was a boxing fan of all things...LOL! :)
