Starting my prerequisites in May...anyone else?

Published

I start my classes may 14th at Brevard community college. I am taking the first 3 classes online. One is a math prep class because I scored low on my placement test. Then I am also take psychology and communication 1. I'm a little scared after watching so many videos on nursing school that I need to get straight A's to get in to the program. I will try my best but I havent been to school in so long. Is anyone else just starting the process like me?

I started taking nursing school prereqs after being out of school 20 years. It's so different as an older adult... I do well because I want to become a nurse and also because my husband and son are sacrificing to allow me this opportunity.

Online classes can be super time consuming. My advice would be to do EVERY assignment, including discussion board posts and extra credit. Make sure to look up your professors on RateMyProfessor.com. I've also saved a ton of money renting textbooks from Chegg.com instead of buying them from the bookstore. If you're struggling in a class then contact the teacher or look for online resources. YouTube has many videos teaching everything under the sun. I've also had good luck borrowing books like "Algebra for Dummies" or "Chemistry for Dummies" from my library.

I've loved A&P. It is a lot of memorization but our bodies are so incredible and it's amazing to learn about them. For Anatomy I'd recommend getting flashcards from your bookstore or Sams Club. Keep them in your purse and study them whenever you have a free minute.

Hi :) I'm 22 and also staring my pre-reqs May 14th and I am super nervous! I am going to Nevada State College though. I'm also taking 2 classes online because some of my credits didn't transfer over so they should be easy classes. Like you, I am stressed about getting all A's because at my school you need at least a 3.5 GPA to be considered for the nursing program...I think I'm most nervous about Anatomy/Biology because I haven't taken a science class in about 4 years :o

Anyway, I just want you to know that you're not alone! I'm glad to see that there are so many people on this site just starting out like me!! Good luck in all of your endeavors!

I am just heading back as well after being out of school 16 years. I also have a husband and 3 young kids! Lord tell me I'm not crazy! LOL I have always wanted to be an RN, so I WILL make it work. I have 3 semesters of core classes/pre-reqs that I need to take before I can take my actual Nursing pre-reqs, so I have a ways to go. This seems like a great place to find support. Anyway, good luck!

Thanks for the great tips :) My boyfriend is really struggling to keep us afloat right now and I just hope I can do this for us so bad :)

Thanks everyone! This site really has helped me feel better and more confident. Now I know I have resources everywhere to help me accomplish this and that there is so many people doing the same thing :) Thanks again for your comments :)

I started my pre-reqs this spring with biology and communications. Starting May 14 I will be taking A&P1 along with Intro Psychology in the first part of the semester and then Developmental Psychology for the last part of the summer semester.

So the way I have it setup I will only be taking two classes at any given time during the summer. I have all of my books and A&P1 looks like it is going to be very interesting but rough.:uhoh3: I plan on take A&P2 in the fall.

I am also starting prereqs in a couple of weeks after being out of school for 19 yrs. I have a degree in a completely unrelated field but want a total change. All of my coursework is also now "too old" to count for prereqs...I'd still have to do some since my degree is unrelated but it is a bummer not to be able to use any of it! I'm going to do 2 summer classes and see how that goes and how many I think I can take on in the fall.

Glad to see I am not the only older person doing this!

Have you heard anything about being accepted into the nursing program ? I applied in March and

am waiting to find out if I got in.

Great to see this thread resurrected! I can't believe it was a year ago that I started on my pre-reqs...wow! So much has happened in a year's time. I completed my pre-reqs, got married and was accepted into nursing school a few weeks ago. Just had my nursing school orientation a few days ago and I'll begin in the Fall :D This was one of the first threads I posted on when I joined the AN boards. Thanks, everyone, for all the support!!!
