Starting Nursing Career and need help (WGU)

Published

Hi Everyone,

I need advice on how to get started with my Nursing Career. Its been 14 years since i was in college and it was not in America and my credits will not transfer here so i have to start from zero. I am considering applying to WGU BSN Prelicensure program. I am confused on where to start. My questions to y'all:-

Are Straighterline Courses accepted by WGU for General Education and Science? If yes, which ones for BSN?

Is it possible to be accepted in WGU if you are not within the States where the course if offered? I am considering travelling for the Lab Classes. I live in TN and the WGU here does not have the BSN.

Where can i study/practice the assessment test for WGU?

Thanks y'all for your help.

You can be accepted to WGU's BSN prelicensure program if you are not in a state where Clinicals are conducted; however, you must be willing to travel to the clinical sites at the designated time. They may ask your plan for the clinical times (I.E. Will you be staying with friends or family, getting a hotel room, etc).

I know they accept some Straigherline courses, but do not know all the details. I would advise you to speak to a WGU enrollment counselor who can better address your questions.

Best of luck!

I work in the pre-licensure program in Indiana and actually had a student from TN complete her BSN. Not easy, but it can happen. Also had one from Pittsburg and one from Michigan come to Indianapolis for clinicals.

Western Governors University is (or was) an official Straighterline partner school, so they do accept some of Straighterline's coursework for transfer credits.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I appreciate.

meanmaryjean, kindly tell me more on how i can get started. I know it will not be easy but i can do it, others have successfully completed the BSN. Let me know if i should consider taking straighterline courses or i should take the WGU courses which i think its cheaper. Thanks.

I commuted. I did prereqs through straighterline and also took CLEP tests. I, like you, had already taken a lot of the courses, but they were too old to transfer so I retook most of my science classes through Straighterline. They did not have microbiology through straighterline at the time so I am not sure if that one's accepted, but I know A&P classes are. You will also have to see about the nutrition class through straighterline. They took it for me, but I had heard somewhere they weren't accepting that any more so you'd have to double check. They take CLEP tests too. I did my humanities, growth & development, and psychology as a CLEP test. I had CLEP'd math when I was younger and that was accepted. If I were starting out I would send in your transcripts, see what if anything they will take and then come up with a game plan for knocking out the prereqs. It's a great program. It's not a perfect program, but it is a great choice for non-traditional students.

Oh and you can't take WGU classes for most of the prereqs. They let you do that for the RN to BSN option, but not the prelicensure. There are only a couple prereqs that they will let you take through WGU - biochemistry, pharmacology, and I think nutrition. Everything else has to be taken prior to admittance. The program changes a lot so I'd confirm what they accept/don't accept for sure.

Thanks...

I did talk to my Enrollment Counselor but she did not tell me the exact courses i should take from straighterline or CLEP. I am just going with what the others have taken. I did send some of my transcripts but WGU said that the credits were too old to transfer plus i did not graduate High School in the US :) Also, she said i am late applying for the classes beginning April 2016. I will have to wait for the nest intake some time in June or July. I plan on knocking out all the prerequisites before April. Did you commute from one state to the other for your clinicals?

Yes, my commute was almost 4 hours. I stayed at hotels and friends and just allotted that into my cost of school budget. It was challenging, but doable.

Wow..... You are an inspiration to me. Thought one hour flight to Dallas was a lot...lol..... Thanks for sharing.

I'm enrolled in Straighterline in CA and WGU has 14 prerequisites. Most, (11?) are offered through Straighterline. Lifespan is not offered and I believe Bio.

Check their website or PM me and I can forward the list from WGU. Also, Stats are offered through straighterline and count as math. So if you need algebra, take stats at straighterline then it counts for both.

Hey, thanks. Its not possible for me to PM you. If you dont mind, kindly post the link here. Thanks
