starting to get frustrated/discouraged

U.S.A. New York

I've been looking for a job for almost an entire month, and nothing. I got one interview, which was the same time as my orientation for school so they told me that was my only chance. I haven't gotten any other call backs. I must have filled out hundreds and hundreds of applications at this point and I am starting to think about just doing anything at this point, waitressing, Idk. I have a bachelor's in another field, but an associates in nursing and finishing a bachelor's this year. If I knew it was going to be like this, I would not have worked so hard to get through school.

estrellaCR: Thanks for the info. Here's what I found if anyone else is interested.[h=1]New York, N.Y., Career Fair[/h][h=2]Nurse.com Career Fairs[/h][h=2]Tuesday, October 28, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM[/h][h=2]Jamaica, NY[/h]

With only an associates, I got hired 3 months after passing NCLEX. I had a professor from Pace University with her gaggle of student nurses tell me that I must have an angel looking out for me because she has students that were 1+ year out with still no job when I came across them during my orientation.

She asked what my secret was.

1- Expand your application radius. I work in Westchester County, and I live on Long Island in Suffolk County.

2- Follow up, but maintain respectfulness. Don't become a stalker, but do make your interest known.

3- Apply, apply, apply. During school I didn't like med-surg. Guess where I started out? On a med-surg/tele floor. =)

Good Luck to you all out there. I remember that time after passing the NCLEX and looking for a job, and the utter despair sinking in as time passed. Persevere through it. It is worth it.

Moochini, u commute to Westchester to and from Long Island each workday? That's dedication. Goes to show if u really want a job and don't have all the reqs either degree type or experience, you have to stand out. And willing to travel such a distance is something few new grads would do.

The NYC DOHMH is hiring for school nurses and they do hire ADN nurses in the position of Junior Public Health Nurse. Check out the job postings on their site. Please do not get discouraged. I had a lot of doors closed in my face as well. Don't give up. I applied to jobs daily and I'm finally starting to see opportunities roll in slowly. Good luck.

where is that listed. I looked on their site and don't see any mention of that. I am willing to travel does anyone know what hospitals or medical centers are reachable by train or bus? I have just moved to new york city and I am still not familiar with the surrounding area at all.

I've applied to places that are within a 2-hr commute from my place. So far only had two interviews and I'm not sure about my status with them. I really hope I get "the call" soon.

Chin up, I'm in same position...something will come through :) When I was in nursing school for a whole 2 years I tried looking for a job with zero success. When I finished this summer, because I thought my schedule was going to open up more, I've been going on nonstop interviews this whole time and I still haven't found anything. I understand how frustrating it is, but don't ever view it as a personal thing, it's just that so many people are out of work and looking for jobs that its just hard to come by one. Once you have your RN I'm sure the doors will open up a little bit more. Try looking into medical office's, perhaps mention in your cover letter your medical background! You also have the right idea at looking at jobs unrelated to the health field, try to take anything you can and keep going. Another user mentioned to network, that's really important :) Have any of the peers you graduated with found work yet? Ask around!

I'm in the same boat. I passed my NCLEX some time in mid July. I've gone on about two interviews but no one will hire because of lack of experience and no internship. I know there are other options like out patient centers, nursing homes, etc., but so many of my other fellow new grads got great full-time jobs at amazing hospitals in the city - with no experience or internships whatsoever. I feel like half of it is just luck, but i have none of that =( .. any recruiters out there willing to give a new grad a chance?

Were those hospital interviews?

I do have my RN. I've been looking for 2 months now, completing my BSN now at hunter and will only take me a year because I have a bachelors in another field. However, I have been very open about jobs, applied to drs offices, clinics, etc and they were part time jobs but they told me because I was in class 2 days a week, it wasn't going to work bc they wanted me available 24/7. I've been looking at nursing homes but I really don't see many advertised jobs from them. Anyone know where to find these nursing homes?? I've googled some and applied but never heard back from any of them. This just seems crazy to me. I worked so hard for my ASN degree, and my bachelors classes are very easy so far, def not making a better nurse. I am waiting for my NJ license in the meantime, hoping I have better luck there.

Has anyone ever considered Home Care as a RN????, they are more likely to hire new grads. You can try companies such as Pioneer Agency

I'll try that. Yes, I actually did just get hired by a home care company, but they woman takes forever to get back to me. She said she's busy and still has to find time to call HR to find out if they have all my paperwork and then she'll find nurses to train me. IF I didn't keep emailing her though or calling I don't think I would have heard from her so it's making me wonder if they have assignments and if they do, I'll even be called for them.

That really sucks. My friend told me that because flu season is near, and there should be opportunities for administering vaccine. I know its not what I really want to do, but I just want my foot in the door. Ive been applying everywhere and no luck. Even with 1 year LPN experience still doesnt help. Trying to remain hopeful.
