I just finished dealing with staffing. I received a very angry call. "Where are you. You are scheduled to work today. You have to come in". I explained that my copy of my work hours says I'm off, that my hubby is in all night budget meetings and that I had two hours of sleep...could I come in from 11p-730a. "NO! Come in now. It's your responsibility to cover your shift." Decided to call my nurses station and found out that there were no changes on the schedule and I was not on for today. Also staffing tried the same thing with two day shift nurses today! Ya'll know what was really going on? This is my short week. The hospital doesn't have to pay me overtime. My theory is they decided to scare and bully me in to save a buck!:angryfire

You must work the same place I do.
Unreal, isn't it?
There's got to be a special place in hell for these people.

Ok........I am mildly ashamed to admit this but............. when someone from the hospital calls and tries to co-erce me into working I simply tell them that I can't because I have been drinking or just took some cold medicine, etc. Is this terrible of me???? I mean, I do my fair share of OT but don't appreciate it when I am forced to or guilted into working. Ok...I will go hang my head in shame.

I'll echo what was said in another thread by Helllloo, it's no wonder there's a nursing "shortage" with this sort of abuse going on.

if you don't have caller id on your phone, get it now! that way you can screen your calls....
and a firm but polite, "sorry, i'm unable to come in" is sufficient.
yet we have to keep in mind, this is the nature of many staffers, as it is their responsibility to ensure staffing- no matter what technique they use.
but yeah, they DO have a way of making you feel guilty, don't they? ugh.

I would just say "no", they don't need any explanation. The next thing you know, they'll be saying you have an alcohol problem.

I understand it is their job to get people to come in, but lying to someone to try to make them think that they have made a mistake with their schedule is just unacceptable. Grab a few annual bonus dollars out of the CEO's pocket and call an agency for a nurse, for heaven's sake!! You should only treat your staff in the manner described by the OP if you no longer want to have a staff.

SO did you go in or not? I'd like to know what happened either way... They really suck for doing that to you!

I had to read this twice to make sure I was comprehending what I was reading. You're saying that you weren't scheduled to work today, but they tried to make like you were by calling and harrassing you to get your butt in even though you were off? So you called your unit to make sure there weren't any changes made that you weren't aware of and you were really and truly off today. Am I correct? If I am, that is truly unbelievable and they have a lot of ballz to do something like that and I would have told them rightfully so. :angryfire Cheeses, you can't even have a day off in peace. Get that caller ID.

GRRR! I think I would followup with the higher ups on this one, particularly since other nurses are getting setup in this little scam as well.
This sounds more like harassment/ hostile work environment when nurses are bullied on the phone by an angry staffing coordinator. What is wrong with people like this????The staffer needs to be reprimanded by her boss IMHO.
I'm sure there is, and this only proves the old saying, "S**t really does float to the top!" :)
