Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Oops, the previous message was meant for HawkinsRV.

Hi there, Sholman713. One quick question for now - are we required to wear scrubs or anything specific for class? I assume we will wear the lab jacket and scrubs underneath for any labs and scrubs for clinical. I'm debating how many pairs of scrubs to stock up on. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sure, I'm happy to answer any questions! :)

You won't have to wear scrubs to lecture classes, but you do have to wear them for labs and clinical. I'd say that I wear scrubs 2-3 times a week. They must be navy blue with the UTSON patch. You can buy scrubs with the patch already sewn on through the school bookstore (an easy and cheap option,) or you can buy any navy scrubs and sew or iron on the patch yourself (which you can buy separately at the bookstore.) There are several scrub shops in the med center and, personally, I'm very fond of my Koi scrub pants and Grey's Anatomy tops.

A lab jacket with a UTSON patch is technically a part of the uniform, but I opted not to buy it and I haven't regretted it. They're only worn when it's cold, and instead you can just wear a navy, white, or gray long sleeve shirt under your scrubs. Actually, in labs (not clinical!) you can wear a hoodie and no one will care.

For lecture classes, you can wear whatever you want. However, remember that you want your instructors and peers to consider you a professional, so try not to wear anything too revealing or grungy. I usually wear jeans and a shirt that covers my tattoos.

Did anyone get a book list with their packet? I need to start bargain shopping for books I think they require about 11 or 12 books. :uhoh3:

I started to look for books too. Yes, its like 11 books.

Go to the bookstore/website and search for the courses required books. They still have FALL semester to search but we have an idea of books we need.

Thanks, HawkinsRV! Very helpful.

On another note, does anyone know what the hold, "Nursing School student affairs" means? It says to contact the school of student affairs but just wanted to see if anyone had an answer here first.

Hookem08, I actually had that same question and called the office and they told me the nursing school student affairs hold refers to your drug test. Hope that helped!

Wow I just looked up the books we'll need for Spring...there are A LOT. That's going to be super expensive...is anyone thinking about searching and buying them through Amazon?

I wonder if they allow installments for the tuition throughout the semester? The books alone came to $800+. I guess we could search on Amazon, but I guess we just need to make sure what editions are acceptable.

I am 99% sure that i saw something about paying tuition in installments. You can check the financial aid website, but i am pretty sure there was something on there about a payment plan option.

congrats to everyone that made it! Traditional class, senior here, est grad date May 2011. I can help answer questions about some things further down the curriculum. facebook.com/maokhan if you got any questions.

Thanks!!!

This may be dumb, but do we need all those books right away? I remember at the info session it was mentioned that during the first semester, you buy books that you will use through the entire program, so it is the most expensive semester for books.

Maybe there aren't some that are needed immediately or could be viewed at the library rather than purchased to cut back a little on costs as we get started? I know that would be a huge help for me...

yeah it'd be nice if we knew which books we needed right away and which ones we could hold off on and try to find used or online. books can get pretty expensive and if you can get them cheaper the savings add up.
