Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Question for all of you...I'm debating between applying for UT-Houston's traditional program and their accelerated program. I know that the accelerated program is 12 months online. How long is the traditional program? The website says 4 consecutive semesters. However, it also says 21 months. How does 4 semesters come out to 21 months? Am I getting my information mixed up? I thought the traditional would be around 15 months or so...

Anyone out there hear any feedback about the 12 month online program? Which would you choose? I'm a career changer with a BA degree. I'd like to finish as quick as possible, but I'm hesitant about an all online program except for clinicals.

Any thoughts??

I'm currently in my second semester at UT houston nursing school and in the generic track. I have a previous BS degree so I was eligible for the accelerated program and was going to apply, but then I looked at the hrs I would have to take per semester and decided to opt for the generic. Taking 20+ hrs per semester to graduate 4 months earlier is not worth it to me. I want to say that about 75% or more of the students that started with me have bachelor's degrees (if not higher), but they decided that it wasn't worth the stress either.

It is a good program for students that HAVE TO get out in a year because they are under time constraints, but for people who can take the extra 4 months, I definitely would... it takes a lot of stress off your shoulders.

Plus, all of the classes are online. I just can't watch online lectures for 6 classes without supplemental lectures in an actual classroom with a professor in front of me to answer my questions.

It all comes down to how you learn and how driven you are you complete the program. If you have questions, I'm happy to answer. Hope that helped!

I have one quick question....what do the breaks look like between semesters at UT for the traditional program?

thanks in advance ; )

Hi All -

Hope these aren't dumb questions, but I'm filling out my application. For the post-secondary institution section, there are darkened fields that are labeled as required information-degree, date of degree, subject of study, etc. I see that we're supposed to use the pdfs with the codes. For the schools that I attended just to complete my prereqs, do I put "none" for degree? The pdf has "--" list for this but the form won't let me type in those characters. What about the "Date of Degree" field? Do I just leave these fields blank or fill the date area in with zeros? Do they absolutely need some kind of information there?

I just wanted to make sure I was filling this information in correctly....

Hi Everybody,

I am new to this website, but I have question for anybody who can answer it. My question is how long does it take for your HESI scores to show up on UTLink after you take HESI Exam? Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out that UTHSC is not accepting a Humanities & Arts class I took in my first undergrad as a Visual & Performing Arts credit.

Anyone have any suggestions for an easy performing arts credit (preferably from HCC)? I'm a little disappointed they didn't accept the course, as it was very similar to an art history class - we studied and had to identity paintings and classical song clips from different time periods.

I thought I'd be done with pre-reqs this summer, but this class is holding me back. I wish they would waive it. I understand the reason for taking this class is to be well-rounded, but I took band from 3rd-12th grade and I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree. So - any suggestions? What did you guys take for the Arts credit?

sure I'm happy to help! After spring semester you have about 2 weeks off or so in mid may. Then at the end of the 11 week summer (what I am currently in right now) you have about a week and a half in mid august. Then you start fall in late august. In December there will be about 3 to 4 weeks off. Then it'll be your last semester!! grad is usually in very early may.

I am currently in the Accelerated program and it's INTENSE. It's not all online, I end up going to the school 3 days a week. Now that clinicals are starting it's 3-4 days a week down in the medical center. The traditional program, from what I understand, is one semester longer than the accelerated program. If you are willing to commit every waking hour to school, with maybe an hour or two every WEEK dedicated to just yourself, then you can succeed in the accelerated program. If you procrastinate at all, it's probably not the program for you. We have tests every Tuesday at 7:45 or 8AM depending on the class, and they're one hour long with 50 questions. Mondays we have lab from 8-12. Wednesdays we had lab from 1-5pm until we started clinicals. As you can see, it's not all online. The lectures are available on a program called Tegrity, and for the most part are pretty good. The best part is being able to speed up the lectures, otherwise you just don't have time to do it all. If you get in, make sure to get the Pharmacology charts, lol!

Hi all! I am also applying to UT Houston for Spring 2011 entry! I am super nervous about the whole process! Some other nursing schools I am applying to require the NursingCAS application. You have to input literally everything you've ever done in your college career, which could make or break you. I'm just concerned what UT Houston will really look at because the application is not very detailed. Do you all think it's mainly grades and HESI exam scores?? And what is a "competitive" HESI score?? I can't really find good info. on that...good luck to everyone!!!!

What sections of the A2 exam does the School of Nursing require?

Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Grammar,

Anatomy and Physiology, Critical Thinking, Learning Styles and Personality Styles.

OMG when I read that I am soo happy that CHEM and PHYSIC is not on the test.. those of you who already took the HESI for UTHS -houston...did they test you on CHEM and Physics?

Hmmm...I got my official HESI scores in my email, but it seems like my summary score sheet didn't display the Grammar section or the Critical Thinking section. I know I got a 100 on Grammar and 880 on Critical Thinking, but I'm worried since it's not displayed on the score sheet and maybe they didn't receive it? Gotta call them tomorrow to see what's up with that :-/. My cumulative score was a 95.

WOW good job!!!!! wow did you score 100 on grammar? did you have a particular vocabulary list u studied? please share :D

Hi! Yes I did score 100 on grammar, and I got a 98 on vocab and general knowledge. However, there wasn't any particular vocabulary list that I studied - I just used the vocab words from the official Evolve Admission Assessment book. I think the vocab list in the study guide is pretty helpful, but I've always read a lot so my vocabulary and grammar are decent. I think if you want additional help, perhaps you could pick up other study guides (like the McGraw Hill one for nursing entrance tests or perhaps even an SAT study guide for the grammar). Also, some people have found the website http://quizlet.com helpful. Just type in 'hesi vocab' into the search tool. I hope that helps! Good luck!

Has anyone experienced any trouble submitting the online application? Whenever I click "Submit," nothing happens. When I click "Reset," nothing happens either.
