Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Hey everyone. I'm new to the post.

I applied for the generic Spring '11 semester a few months ago.

To answer a few of your questions- (hope it helps)

I took my HESI in may as well, and sent in my application shortly after.

I, like you guys, was worried about the online status of my scores, transcripts, etc.

It's pretty hard to contact the school about certain questions, but I called several people and finally got some of my questions answered:

If you have taken the HESI and sent in your application, the school has access to your scores.

The woman I spoke with said she can see my scores, but the online status won't be updated until later. (it had to do with processing/transferring data, etc.)

Regarding transcripts, even if they have a copy of your transcript, it will show "no official document on record" until you finish ALL of the needed prerequisites.

So, in my case, I wont be finishing prerequisite until the the semester before the spring. And I was told to just keep sending in updated versions of my transcript as I complete courses.

So they most likely have everything you sent them, it just takes a very long time to update everything. (A counselor of mine told me they actually send all the information to UT Austin 1st, then back to UT Houston! ha!)

As for interviews, I was told that they don't start analyzing applications until after the deadline in September. After that they will inform people about coming in for interviews and writing sample!

So I'm stuck playing the waiting game until then!

I'm so nervous!

How was the HESI exam? any suggestion for AP and vocabulary section? Please help

-Nam543

It really wasn't that bad.

I strongly suggest getting the review book though.

The vocabulary was pretty straightforward for the most part. There were some words I didn't know, but again, the review book really helped me out a lot there.

I took the HESI without having taken AP2, so it was a little difficult for me. but since I reviewed quite a bit, I managed to score fairly well.

As with all the subjects, it's mostly generic questions. If you did well in the classes, then it should be no problem with a little reviewing.

good luck!

HI! does UT-houston have + or - grading scale?? because grades from some of my UH classes have + and -. And do they look at volunteer hours b/c TWU said they don't at all.

I dont think so...never heard about that ..so probably no

Does anyone know how many people UTHSC accepts each semester?

I know it's highly competitive and I want to get in so badly!!

Regarding grades, I don't believe that UT looks at the + or -; I think they just look at the letter grade. However, regarding volunteer hours, this is posted on their site:

"During the interview process, the applicant may be evaluated on additional elements which may include: communication skills, experience in dealing with people, experience in health care, ability to articulate career goals, community service, and extra curricular activities."

So it looks like they may take volunteer hours into account.

UT- houston does not have a + and - grading scale

Hi, everyone!

I am new to this board, and applying to the Traditional Spring 2011 program. My application is ready to go, my grades / test scores are solid, I am loving nursing, UTHSC is my first choice and I am dying to get in!

I know this is probably a little early, but I'm a neurotic planner and worried that I'll be accepted to this program and then caught without the financial means to get started this spring. I am single and will be totally dependent on loans to cover my living and school expenses while I am not working.

I'm hoping current students can shed some light on what is expected of us financially in January and how dependable UT financial aid is at helping students get the funding they need to make it possible to attend the program. I dug through the Fin Aid website, but it wasn't particularly detailed with regard to time lines, etc....

Thanks in advance to all who respond!

I'm a second semester nursing student (I'm started in the spring like many of you will!) at UT.

For your first semester:

1. tuition + fees were about $3,200 or so (If you have health insurance, then you can deduct $400)

2. Books/uniform/supplies probably were close to $1000 or more (don't worry the next semester, books are around $200)

3. parking is not pretty... there are some that carpool and park in the med center ($12 after 6 hrs i think... you'll usually be there more than 6 hrs+ when you come in; you'll be in class 3 times per week plus lab days/clinical days), some take the light rail ($3 a day to park and about a $1 total to ride both ways), some take the bus in from a park and ride (I want to say this is like $4 or $5 dollars total), some park in the brown lots and take the med center shuttle, some park on el paseo for free and get a ride from the UT shuttle also for free (there are limited spaces so i wouldn't suggest parking there on a day where you really need to get to school on time), and... there are probably other ways, but those are the main ones i know of. And of course gas will need to be factored in.

4. Living expenses: yeah it depends. I know of places in the med center that are one bedroom that run around $700/month + utilities + internet.

I can't think of anything else. Is there something i missed?

UT is pretty good with their financial aid. Just make sure to turn in your FAFSA and scholarship application when they send you your packet with your acceptance letter. I am also dependent on loans/scholarships and they are very prompt about getting money out to the students. When they get the loan money, they will automatically deduct your tuition/fees and then, if you sign up for direct deposit (which i suggest you do, so that you don't have to deal with lost checks), will deposit the rest of the money in your bank account/mail the check to your permanent address. Signing up for direct deposit can also be done at the financial aid office.

Hope that helped!

I am a UT nursing student who began the program this past spring 2010. I've heard varying numbers ranging from a total of 700 to 1000 applicants for 80-100 spots (i think one of the admissions people said that they interview 1/3 to 1/2 of those applicants with complete files). Again, not all of those applicants had complete files though... I'm not sure how many didn't. That is all i know! :) and don't take those numbers as fact... this is just through word of mouth with the people in my class.

kimmy088 - THANK YOU SO MUCH for that very helpful info!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate it - I was so worried it might be March before they could get loan disbursements out and I wouldn't be able to cover tuition/rent, which would really leave me unable to get started. Sounds like that isn't typically the case - what a relief!

Also sounds like I may need to be more worried about parking than student loans - that hadn't even crossed my mind. Whoops. :-)

Thanks again for the response and good luck with your classes - I am a ton less worried than I was a few nights ago!
