Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

I am a UT nursing student who began the program this past spring 2010. I've heard varying numbers ranging from a total of 700 to 1000 applicants for 80-100 spots (i think one of the admissions people said that they interview 1/3 to 1/2 of those applicants with complete files). Again, not all of those applicants had complete files though... I'm not sure how many didn't. That is all i know! :) and don't take those numbers as fact... this is just through word of mouth with the people in my class.

i've already submitted my app, but am currently finishing my prereqs. I basically had the minimum credit to apply. i'm taking 4 classes this summer (govt, soci, eng II, hist II) and my final 2 classes (micro & stats) this fall.

i did well on the hesi. 95 cumulative. 850 critical thinking

does this put my app at a disadvantage because I still have so many prereqs to complete still?

also, are you able to work at all while in school?

any thoughts??

No problem! Glad i could help! :)

If you have anymore questions, just PM me!

kimmy088 - THANK YOU SO MUCH for that very helpful info!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate it - I was so worried it might be March before they could get loan disbursements out and I wouldn't be able to cover tuition/rent, which would really leave me unable to get started. Sounds like that isn't typically the case - what a relief!

Also sounds like I may need to be more worried about parking than student loans - that hadn't even crossed my mind. Whoops. :-)

Thanks again for the response and good luck with your classes - I am a ton less worried than I was a few nights ago!

I really don't know how much they look at how many classes you completed vs. classes you have yet to complete. They did ask during my interview, where I took A&P and if i repeated that class at all. I want to say that A&P was the only course they asked specifically about... I may be wrong though. All in all, I don't think it'll put you at a disadvantage.

Some people did work while taking classes but it is really hard... i know a few people who just quit their jobs before starting this semester (2nd semester) because they thought it wasn't worth it. Most can only work part time at the most or have a really flexible supervisor. I would not advise you to work...especially when you're first getting used to school and such... BUT still it's possible.

Hope that helped!

I am applying to UTHSC-H generic program for Spring 2011 as well :) so good luck to everyone!!

I submitted my application in April, took my HESI in June (which is still not on UTLink, I'm glad I am not the only one in this situation!) I got an 88.99% overall and a 820 on critical thinking! I also have a BS in biology from Texas A&M - hoping that will help in the application process!

Does anyone know the time frame of letters for interviews and acceptance? I am so anxious, I cannot stand this waiting game!

Best of luck to everyone, and hope to meet a lot of you in the spring (fingers CROSSED) :)

For my class that entered for spring 2010, the interview first letters arrived on Sept 1 (that is when I got my letter). Interviews ran until early-mid October I want to say, and we started getting acceptance letters the first week of November.

Hi Kimmy

What do you think of the class load since the program is only 1 year long? Would you recommend doing it in 1yr program or stretched out like other nursing programs?

Well the program that starts in the spring is 18 months... the accelerated program at UT is 12 months. I think TWU has summers off right? Is that what you're referring to (their 24 month program... don't quote me on that)? What is good about UT's 18 month or 12 month program is that you get done really quick..... bad? you rarely have down time and you're just pushed through. In the 2 year program you have a summer so you can do internships and have that time off to rest and do other stuff besides nursing school.

It all just depends on you and what your priorities are. Both are good schools and they both have very good programs. Hope that helped! :)

Hi Kimmy

I'm currently applying to the Spring 2011 BSN program. I have an overall GPA of 3.8 and a science GPA of a 4.0. I am taking the HESI in 2 1/2 weeks. I know that they will not get my official scores until after the Sept 1 deadline, but I was told that was okay. However, will that hurt my chances of getting an early interview??

As far as the HESI A&P section goes, how many questions were on it and was the section very challenging? I've reviewed all of the material for the other sections and it seems pretty straight forward, but I'm very apprehensive about the A&P section. Also, what are the critical thinking and learning styles sections like?? Since we are the first round applying with the HESI exam, the admissions office was unable to tell me what the average score was. I'm curious as to what most of the people on this site have scored so far.

Any help I can get would be SO much appreciated!!!

It makes me feel so much better to know that nobody else can see their HESI scores on UT link. I've called there like 5 times asking why I can't see them..they probably think I'm crazy.

For the HESI anatomy section, there are some pretty detailed questions, but then some that are super easy. I almost started crying halfway through because I thought I was going to fail, but then ended up with a 93 on it.

Kimmy088-I know I'm a bit ahead of myself on asking you this, but what is the writing sample like that is given at interviews and how heavily do you think they weigh that? Thank you for all your posts and advice! It has really made this whole process a little less stressful for me!

steph39323,

Would you say that using the Evolve study guide for the A&P section would be sufficient? Or should I go through my anatomy books to be more thorough?? I know there are only 25 questions on the section, so that means you can't miss very many at all!

Um that is tricky. I did awful on the practice A&P in the book and so of course the night before my test I started flipping through my 1000 page A&P book. That's a joke..and just stresses you out more. The questions are very similar to whats in the book so I would just stick with that! Hope this helps and good luck!!

KAP37-when did you graduate? I just graduated in May with a BS in Kinesiology from A&M!

My class had to take the NET for admissions. Our actual NET scores were never visible on our UT link... it just indicated that they received them.

It's okay! Don't worry about the writing sample at all! It's really not that big of a deal... I think most of us walked away talking about the interview more so than the writing sample. My thoughts about the writing sample are that they're just trying to gauge how well you can express your thoughts and ideas on paper. I'm not sure how heavily they weigh the writing sample, but I would guess not that much. :) Hope that helped and you're welcome!
