Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

**sigh of relief**

now the waiting...I've turned in all my paperwork, finished my HESI... I have nothing left to do except wait for an interview letter... omg--I think I'm going to go crazy.

Hmmm...I got my official HESI scores in my email, but it seems like my summary score sheet didn't display the Grammar section or the Critical Thinking section. I know I got a 100 on Grammar and 880 on Critical Thinking, but I'm worried since it's not displayed on the score sheet and maybe they didn't receive it? Gotta call them tomorrow to see what's up with that :-/. My cumulative score was a 95.

Has anyone taken the HESI at the Harwin location in Houston? I am taking it later this month and called to double-check on whether or not a calculator is provided. The lady at the testing center left me a voicemail saying no, a calculator is not allowed! This can't be right since I have seen multiple posts that there is a calculator on the screen. Has anyone else taken the HESI there that can confirm this? Or can those who have taken it in Houston, post where they took it and whether or not they had a calculator on screen? THANKS!!

I took the Hesi at the Harwin location this past Sunday. There IS an electronic calculator provided on screen with the program, but not an actual, physical calculator.

I think Prometrics probably administers many different tests, and the lady is probably uninformed about the specifics of each test.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! That makes me feel so much better about taking it at that site. I figured that it couldn't be right but I had to make sure.

Congrats on your 95! That's awesome :) Can I ask what you did to prepare? I have the Evolve HESI prep book, an anatomy focused prep book and few other materials.

Thanks! To prepare, I used the HESI study guide and the anatomy portion of the McGraw Hill study guide. I was mostly worried about the A& P section, but I took A & P I this past Spring semester, and am currently taking A & P II, so most of the stuff is still fresh in my mind. In my opinion, the questions were general concepts and easier than I thought it would be.

For the math portion, make sure you know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions really well. Also know your conversions and ratios. I did all of the HESI math problems by hand without a calculator and I felt that was good practice.

The grammar section in the HESI prep book was pretty decent, but I think if you have a good grasp of the English language and know how to speak correctly, you should do fine. The Reading Comprehension section was okay in the prep book - I actually didn't do so well with the practice tests, and I'm not sure how you would prepare for that - just read carefully, I suppose. That was the most difficult section for me on the test, and took me the most time because I kept going back and forth between answers.

I think with the study materials you have, you should do fine. Good luck on your test!

Thanks for the feedback! I am most worried about A&P. I have only taken A&P 1 and will not take A&P II til the fall. I have the McGraw-Hill anatomy book as well so hopefully I'll be able to teach myself the new material that way. Thanks again for the helpful feedback and good luck with your applications :)

Good luck to all of you! I remember being in you all shoes a few months ago. I will begin at UT in the fall. If you have any questions that I can answer don't hesitate to ask.

onmyway, how did you do on ur hesi and what was ur gpa when you got accepted?

I made a 85 on the NET and my GPA was a 3.8 overall and 3.75 science

Question for all of you...I'm debating between applying for UT-Houston's traditional program and their accelerated program. I know that the accelerated program is 12 months online. How long is the traditional program? The website says 4 consecutive semesters. However, it also says 21 months. How does 4 semesters come out to 21 months? Am I getting my information mixed up? I thought the traditional would be around 15 months or so...

Anyone out there hear any feedback about the 12 month online program? Which would you choose? I'm a career changer with a BA degree. I'd like to finish as quick as possible, but I'm hesitant about an all online program except for clinicals.

Any thoughts??

Starting in summer the trad program would be spring11, summer11, fall11 and spring12...so about 18months
