I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)
Deladido - I hope for her a fast recovery. I find it truly amazing the strength people have to persevere through their disease.
yea... it seems like she isnt as bothered as everyone else around her. most patients that I have seen(not that many) seems like the family freaks out more than the patient
I do not understand why UT allows people, who already have a bachelor's degree, to apply to the traditional program. I feel like those people should only be allowed to apply to the accelerated program. This has been my ultimate goal from the beginning. I have never changed my mind about what career I want. This is my ultimate dream. Why not give every opportunity (all 80-100 spots) to people who are getting their very first bachelor's degree? People who have bachelors degrees already obtained a life with a job... I need to get there now.... My life is supposed to be starting now. That is just the way i feel. There is a lot of competition as it is... why put us both in the same category?
I am a second degree applicant and I thank God for allowing me this second chance. I can't wait to become a nurse! I hope you get in, become friends with people who have second degrees and change your mind about what you typed above. I wish you the best of luck. :)

The purpose of nursing school is to educate those that would make the best nurses. Why shouldn't everybody get an equal chance? It is not in the school's best interest to skip over qualified applicants.
I am a second degree student. I was pre-med and after three years in college I realized I should be a nurse instead of a doctor for a number of reasons. My school did not have a nursing program so I finished my degree and applied to nursing schools. Oftentimes second degree students are making a more informed decision when deciding on nursing school...having a degree does not mean we want it less than you do!
BTW...a BA does not get you a much better job than no degree nowadays...you need to go further.
I think the whole point of the second degree applicant comment was that UT Houston is one of the few schools that does not seperate a first time degree student and one that already has a degree. Most other schools have different spots for them. I don't think it was an attack on anyone who is a second degree applicant it was just a comment.
I think that people are taking this way too far. I am not jealous in any way. Everyone who is qualified deserves the same chance. However, i feel like they should allow the people who do not have a degree the opportunity to fill the traditional program spots. The accelerated program is specifically designed for second degree applicants.. there are soooo many people who are qualified that don't have a degree yet that want to become a nurse..

wwantsthis,
everyone is entitled to their opinion so you are free to have one. Thankfully, you do not make the decision so i guess we "second degree" candidates can be thankful for that. That being said Compassion is a major characteristic of a great nurse and the inability to show compassion to others i.e. see things from the view of the "second degree candidate" shows a lack of compassion. just saying....
I am proud of my previous degree(S) BSc. and MSc. and I know the work experience I gained will help me be an amazing nurse one day. I am grateful for the second chance! Thank you U.S.A because some people never get the chance to obtain a high school diploma talk less of a College degree and an amazing profession.

All the programs I looked at allow second degree students to apply for traditional programs, so it's not just UT.
Also, nursing is a career that people in all phases of life want to pursue. You'll find people who got all of their prereqs at their local junior college, some who went to a major university for 2-3 years, people who just obtained bachelors degrees, and others who have tons of years of work experience. Not only that, you are going find people from their late teens all the way to their 50s or 60s in a nursing program. There is no reason why any of those people shouldn't have a shot at a spot. Why would you want to limit someone's ability to become a nurse just because they made a decision to pursue this career a little later than you? Either way, getting into a program is competitive for everyone, no matter your background.
I think it's inaccurate to say that those who already have bachelor's degrees "already obtained a life with a job."Also, the accelerated program and the traditional program are very different in that the accelerated is largely online. I don't think it would be fair to force those with a previous degree to take online classes. Everyone should be able to choose how they want to learn, whether it's in a classroom or online.
Now, This is a rational reason.

her cancer isnt in remission... technically she should have been dead 8 years ago.. then again 3 years ago..
she has group B streptococcus at the moment.. and has some sort of bleeding that they found in her stool.
she has an endoscopy within the next hour. so hopefully they can find the source and stop it.
