Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Specializes in Hematology/Oncology.
I work at MD Anderson. I hear that there is a time commitment for volunteers.

3 and a half set hours a week isnt gonna kill me for 6 months. doesnt really bother me at all.

That isn't bad at all. It's a great hospital to get to know. The patients are pretty amazing and the employees are great to work with. I so hope I get a job after I graduate with MD Anderson.

arent you guaranteed a job at md anderson or hermann if you go to UTH?

i was under the impression that for the nursing schools. whatever your learning hospitals are you have automatic acceptance. kind of like "well you learned under us so you might as well work for us"

my grandma is actually fighting multiple myeloma right now... she just got pneumonia a week ago... so i do owe them something... plus it will be nice for nursing school when i enter so I have a general idea of the place... or the hours look good too

so its a triple win

How is your grandma doing? One of my coworkers, sisters is in remission from myeloma and doing pretty well. She had great doctors hear at MD Anderson.

I'm not sure if you are guaranteed a job. I am apart of MD Anderson's Nursing Cohort program and they said I'm not guaranteed a job but, I will get an interview.

I would not think that we would be guarenteed a job at the hospital just because we went to UTH. I would think lots of nurses would want to work there not just ones from UTH so it would not be fair if ~80 people a semester were guarenteed jobs... but thats just me :/

someone told me that... i am going to double check before i risk spreading anymore rumors

ok i am sorry. if you do an externship on your last year it will ALMOST guarantee a job

which is something i still need to clarify because its an 18 month program

I do not understand why UT allows people, who already have a bachelor's degree, to apply to the traditional program. I feel like those people should only be allowed to apply to the accelerated program. This has been my ultimate goal from the beginning. I have never changed my mind about what career I want. This is my ultimate dream. Why not give every opportunity (all 80-100 spots) to people who are getting their very first bachelor's degree? People who have bachelors degrees already obtained a life with a job... I need to get there now.... My life is supposed to be starting now. That is just the way i feel. There is a lot of competition as it is... why put us both in the same category?

Wow, don't hate on the second degree peeps! ;)

I think it's inaccurate to say that those who already have bachelor's degrees "already obtained a life with a job."

Also, the accelerated program and the traditional program are very different in that the accelerated is largely online. I don't think it would be fair to force those with a previous degree to take online classes. Everyone should be able to choose how they want to learn, whether it's in a classroom or online.

I think that is the most ignorant comment I have seen in this forum. I hope that you are just doing out of sheer anger and jealousy. You get in not because of your 2nd degree. you get in because you are the right person for the spot.

Some people cant get jobs. then they realized that nursing is where they belong but it took them longer... but they did. not everyone has a direct goal in life or had their life in the right direction. but when it hits them that doesn't mean they shouldnt pursue their dreams because it is late.

Everyone deserves second chances and it doe ssound like you are doing this out of anger.

Bottom line. if you get in it is cause you deserve it and show that you are capable of doing it. if you dont get in. try again. but dont look at other people like they shouldnt do this.

you might as well go to all the older people that start college and tell them to get out because they already had their chance.

it just isn't right....

btw I am not a second degree applicant
