Spring 2014 Samuel Merritt University BSN direct-entry Nursing Program

Published

Hello everyone!

I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 :( I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)

Hi everyone!

Congrats to those that got accepted!! do you all mind sharing your gpa and teas scores? I'm trying my best to stay calm and wait patiently but this process isn't going very well.

Congratulations you two, KnCMommy and gilmanRN. That is the perfect end to the week and an epic beginning to the weekend and New Year . I haven't heard anything yet. Fingers crossed for the happiest of happy endings and beginnings. Cheers!

Hoping for the best for you! Thank you and crossing my fingers for you!

Togagirl2, I had a 73.3% on my TEAS with 85-95% on the three areas they look at individually and all As except for 1 B. Good Luck, I wish you a good outcome! It is a trying process, I know of a couple people who have had to apply 2-3 times before they were accepted but all you can do is your best and keep trying, don't give up.

Hey togagirl2 I got an 81.3 on my overall TEAS with 90 in science, 88 in math, and a 75 in reading. I also had a 3.76 on my pre-req classes, with a 4.0 in my sciences. I also have 4 years experience working in the emergency room. I had applied for Fall 2013 and was denied. It is typical to have to apply more than once, but my fingers are crossed for all of you. Keep your heads up and don't give up. Good luck!!!

Congratulations to those of you who got acceptance letters today!!!! Hopefully I will be joining in your celebration soon!

I hope so too!!!

Congrats everyone who got accepted!! :)

I had a question for you guys that also applied in the Fall... Did you need to resubmit your letters of recommendation, or do they keep them on file for the next application cycle?? Thanks!

I resubmitted my letters if recommendation. Not sure if they keep them on file or not- but I didn't want to risk them somehow not getting attached to my application.

Thanks Emilee! Are you still waiting for your admission decision? I haven't hear anything:/ they sure are doing this different this year..

I met with a councilor to see where I could improve and she said that I didn't need to resubmit them, but if I wouldnt have met with her then I would have sent new ones in. It isn't guaranteed that they will keep anything on file though. So I would have checked with them.

Hey @Roro1111 I am still waiting for admission decision. It stinks because my current employer (group of 4 cardiologists) are selling their private practice to the local hospital so we are all being transferred which is fine, but they want my availability and I'm over here like "ummmm ... I'll find out soon???" Darn it!! Lol. Fingers and toes are crossed!! I have worked as a medical assistant for 6 yrs for these doctors so I am happy I have a job if school doesn't pan out this time around but I am praying it does!!!! Good luck to you:)
