Spring 2014 Samuel Merritt University BSN direct-entry Nursing Program

Published

Hello everyone!

I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 :( I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)

Hi everyone! I'm also anxiously waiting for SMU's decision! I haven't received any email from them stating there would a delay and last I heard I should have known by last week! Sent an email to the counselor Friday but still no response. I've heard that a lot of people have already received denials so I'm hoping they're just working out the accepted and waitlist at this point. Fingers crossed for us all!

Oh, I forgot to add.. This wait is TORTURE!

Hey all,

I got my acceptance e-mail around 8am today. I'm so excited and I hope you all receive yours very soon! Good luck to everyone and congrats to those accepted!

I have heard nothing and didn't receive an email explaining the delay either. I have no idea what's going on and what kind of system they're using to get these applications done and I know they're under a lot of pressure too but I'd wish they'd communicate with us better. This waiting is giving me so much anxiety. I just want to know already!!!!!

Congrats barr4!!

@barr4 : what was your gpa & teas score if you don't mind? Im getting so nervous here. It's been so hard getting a hold of anyone in the admissions office. Im not giving up, but this is torturing me =(

@lizzz415 It kinda makes sense, i mean I'm sure at this point most of the denials have gone out. So the ones who haven't heard anything at all I'm guessing we are the wait listed or accepted students? They are just trying to figure it all out, something like that lol...but its better than getting a denial letter loll...

Bebegirl, I don't mind! I was following this thread since it started and I wanted everyone to post their stats, ha. My gpa was 3.83 and my teas was 87.3. I've emailed the admissions counselor and office a few times before finding out and no reply. The waiting sucks!! I hope you hear soon! I checked my e-mail everyday @ 8am because I noticed a trend and sure enough, this morning at 8am, I got my e-mail. The selection process seems pretty erratic at this point.

Does anyone know how many transfers they're accepting? Last time I talked to the counselor she said 16....

Yeah I'm not sure. Don't quote me on that, but when I met with the counselor after I got denied for fall 2013 to see what I can improve on, she said they accepted ten transfer students and I asked her how many she thinks they'll accept in the spring, and i swear she said sixteen because I remember hearing they let "more" people in for the spring. But It also does depend on how many sister school students decide to finish their 2+2 at smu and not at another sister school
