Spring 2014 Samuel Merritt University BSN direct-entry Nursing Program

Published

Hello everyone!

I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 :( I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)

Hi everyone I just got off the phone with a counselor who informed me the reason that there are still so many of us waiting is because there was a miscommunication between SMU and the web application provider and only half of the applications were sent over first! So now the other half is under review by the nursing department and decisions are slowly being made. She actually looked to see if there was a decision for me personally and my application is still under review. She assured me that we all still have a chance and there are still spots open. She also said that the reason I may have not received the email that was sent Friday regarding the lengthy wait was because my email is a gmail account and for some reason "Gmail doesn't like their system". So check spam folders if you have gmail! I feel like if there was a decision made she would have told me over the phone so maybe it's not a bad idea to call and check your status. bottom line is STILL ANXIOUSLY WAITING.

Wow...that's crazy... Thanks for letting us know. Good luck to all of us still anxiously waiting

No worries, I have been keeping up with this thread for the same reason. I have a 4.0 prerequisite GPA (3.95 overall) and I received a 92.7 on the TEAS. Also, I have two outstanding non-science classes that will be completed this December. So for those worried about that, it is possible to get in with classes in progress! Good luck everyone!

Anybody hear anything today???

Nope, still waiting over here:/ This has become really stressful! I hope we find out soon..

No special news. Yesterday I got a general message because I sent a counselor an email about when we'd find out and she said, yes decisions have been made and sent out, but they haven't all been sent out. The email also said there's no definite timeline that she can give us.. Basically it was no help at all :( but I guess it's important to all keep hope alive because not all decisions have been sent out yet... Ugh! I now have a pimple on my face from all the stress, I've named it Samuel Merritt

@kayevangelista. lol about your "Samuel Merritt" friend!!! Which counselor? It it ---------------------? I have emailed her and called her and no response at all.. I called today and got a general voicemail for office of admissions that no one was available at the time-- called back later and same general message that no one was available. It is so frustrating!!!

Lol!! I know,

I wish there was some sort of timeline that they could throw out there for us!! Are any of you guys applying for the CSU's as a back up plan?? I was going to wait to her back from SMU but the deadline is creeping up..

I am applying to CSUs as well. I was hoping I would know about SMU before I started my application for the states, but we only have about a week to get the apps in. I just want to know already!

I haven't heard anything either! What time did you call today? I called around 3:30 yesterday and got right through to the admissions office. I'm thinking about applying to CSUEB but I applied there and state last year and didn't get in so I'm not very optimistic. Still really hoping for an SMU acceptance!

If you don't mind me asking what were your stats when you applied to cal state? I'm just tying to figure out if it's worth me applying?? Thanks!

Lolol! Samuel Merritt! That's really funny!!!

@roro I don't mind. When I applied I had a 3.6 prereq gpa and got an 82 on my TEAS. I also had work experience and a second language. CSUEB accepts on a point based scale, on their website you can look up how they break down the points. I worked it out and I had about 87 points out of 100 and didn't even make the waitlist! It's so competitive everywhere it sucks. I know people who applied 5 years before getting in anywhere :/
