Spring 2014 Samuel Merritt University BSN direct-entry Nursing Program

U.S.A. California

Hello everyone!

I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 :( I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)

I will be applying to the BSN program for Spring 2014. I applied for Fall 2013 semester and was not accepted. I am going to meet with a counselor and see how I can improve my application. Are you transferring from one of the partner schools?

Hi!! Unfortunately I am not. Are you? What kind of gpa and teas last semester if you don't mind me asking?

I also applied for the Fall semester and didn't get accepted. They told me the reason I wasn't chosen was due to only 10 seats being available, and that I had 4 classes in progress. They said that because they didn't know if I would receive the grades for those classes or not it made my application less strong. I am going to be re-applying for the Spring 2014 semester, and will now have everything done. I hope this doesn't discourage you, but they also told me that the classes in progress would not hurt my application, yet that was the reason for my denial. I was really torn up about not being accepted, especially when I felt that I had a high chance of getting in.

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that :( same thing the counselor told me was that it wouldn't hurt either so I'm taking another year to have all my prereqs done... I'm also thinking of retaking classes I got Cs in because I have so much time. I heard there are more seats in the spring? What was your gpa and teas score if you don't mind me asking? I find it discouraging that they would say it wouldn't hurt your application but at the same time they do look at those and consider those who have them all completed... Which makes sense because they know how competent you are. It's just that false hope that it wouldn't hurt sucks.

Hey! I'm actually applying for the Spring 2014 semester too. However, my GPA is even lower than yours! I have a 3.2 GPA but I have over 3 years of volunteer experience and my CNA certificate and work experience, so I'm hoping that'll help a little. I was wondering if you've taken your TEAS yet? I'm actually studying for mines right now! I'm so nervous because I feel like I need to score really high to make up for my low GPA! :(

Hey everyone,

I'm applying to Merritt also for Spring 2014. I'm taking my TEAS exam for the second time this saturday and I am super nervous. How is the application coming along for all of you? Also is there a place on the application that allows you to mention your volunteer experience? I have also been volunteering at a hospital but its difficult to express all that you have accomplished with only a 300 word limit for your personal statement. This is such a tough and long struggle, but I hope I get to see all of you next semester!

Hello togagirl,

Good luck on your TEAS exam! I'm taking mine for the first time on Monday! I'm extremely nervous too! I can't seem to get passed the first page of the application because I have to enter my TEAS scores first. Do you have any classes in progress? And is this your first time applying?

Hi!

Yes this is my first time applying and I'm very nervous. I am currently enrolled in physio lab and lecture for this fall semester but other than that my prereqs are complete. As for the application, I had that same problem. I entered in my old TEAS scores and attached the document for proof just so I could continue. You can always go back and change everything if need be.

Good luck on your TEAS exam as well! Where are you taking it?

Heey,

This is also my first time applying & I'm enrolled for Micro in the fall. How'd your TEAS go? I'm scheduled for this Monday in San Francisco. Are you applying to any other programs? I'm thinking about applying to community colleges for next fall if I don't get in. I would love to just get in a BSN program, but don't we all. Good luck with your application! Deadline is almost here!

Hi!! Unfortunately I am not. Are you? What kind of gpa and teas last semester if you don't mind me asking?

No, I'm not. I met with a counselor and she told me that my application looked good and to try again. I had 4 classes in progress so that could have been the reason why I was not accepted. My overall GPA is 3.6 but the counselor told me that SMU uses the overall prerequisite GPA and mine is 3.9. I have a 3.0 science GPA which doesn't look too good on my app. I got an 80% on the TEAS and I am taking the TEAS again this Friday.

Did anyone get on the waitlist? Has anyone turned in their applications yet?

Hi everyone!

I'm starting my second semester at SMU in just a few short weeks. I got in last year, and I was freaking out about my application, so you guys are in great company! lol :). You can check out our thread from last year, because we all had similar questions. I will tell you that we got our acceptance letters around November 14th of 2012, so you will have to wait for a few months.

If you guys have any questions, let me know! I highly recommend SMU and glad to see that some of you are reapplying. Good luck to you all!!! :)
