Hello everyone!
I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)
Hey Guys!! I too am re-applying for Spring 2014 @ Samuel Merritt. I applied for Fall start and didn't get in or waitlisted. I was super bummed, but can't let it stop me. I had 4 prereqs in process at that time- maybe one of the reasons I was denied. My TEAS sucks ( overall 70)my GPA is fair 3.5 in science prereqs and overall around 3.4, but I am a medical assistant and have worked in Cardiology for almost 6yrs. I have great letters of recommendation and hope they really help :/ just finishing up my application and personal statement.
(?)QUESTION(?) for those who are applying- in the section where you list Recommenders how do you attach their letters- or does Samuel Merritt email them??? Also are you putting yes or no to 'waive the right to view the recommendation?'
Thank you!! and GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! My fingers are crossed :)
I had emailed and inquired about sending the hard copies of my letters of recommendations since I just recently learned the applications are now online. One of the counselors said the hard copies would still be accepted so I'll just be sending it in via mail and just completing the online app. Did anyone have a hard time completing the writing sample? It's a bit tricky with a 300 word limit!
@msmarie I agree writing sample was tricky with the 300 word limit :/ and I kinda wish it was a different prompt- I feel like it will be hard to stand out at all since are response will all probably be very similar...but I guess they may just be looking for writing style/skill and if you hit key points?!?!?
Has anybody received a rejection letter? I heard a rumor that if you have not, it means that you have a very good chance of getting in. We have been promised a decision by 9/11, but may take a few more days. I am currently taking Pathophys and Pharm with a lot of other applicants to SMU ABSN Peninsula, and their stats are amazing! Competition is tough for Spring 2014.

I'm applying to the ABSN and ELMSN-FNP programs! Trying to get through all of the writing samples right now... Hoping for the FNP cause I haven't taken pathophys or pharmacology, but we'll see how it goes.
Maryk - what were your stats? Do you mind sharing?
