Spring 2014 Samuel Merritt University BSN direct-entry Nursing Program

Published

Hello everyone!

I will be applying to SMU's direct-entry BSN program for the Spring of 2014 and was wondering if anyone is going to be applying for that term as well. I met with a counselor about my prereqs and I have about 6 prereqs in progress for the fall, and 2 to be taken over the summer. I asked her if it would hurt my chances since its a large number of class (with physio and developmental psych among them) and she said it won't and that it's normal since that happens to most people. They will base me on what I have already done. I have 2 C's and the rest are all A's and B's. If I do well in my summer classes, I'm looking at around a 3.4 :( I know it's not that great of a GPA... But the counselor said that they will be looking at more than just my GPA (btw, the counselors there are really nice as oppose to the school that I asked for help and told me that I should reconsider nursing and find another degree since my grades weren't that well). I have volunteer experience and hope to complete my 100hrs by the deadline. I also hope to have my volunteer supervisor and microbio prof as my recommendations. And she said that they look for mainly the reading comprehension and math sections of the TEAS-- must meet or exceed national average so I hope to be studying this summer for that as well. Anyone who has been accepted have any tips on what they did to get in? What should I do to be a competitive candidate? If this doesn't work out what else schools will overlook my overall GPA? (My overall GPA with SMU's prereqs is significantly higher than my overall at my school right now, which is only a 3.00.. sad, I know). How to write an exceptional essay to stand out? Also anyone else applying for that term? What're your stats? Thanks in advanced and good luck to everyone! :)

I actually got my acceptance email yesterday at 8:00am, and my computer login information came 2 minutes after that. Btw Mary, did you send your deposit to the office of admission or did you pay it online? I did it online and I'm wondering if I should have done it the other way...

We didn't have an online option when I sent my deposit. I had to call the office of admission and give them my CC info over the phone. Either way is fine, I'm sure. If it doesn't post from your account in a few days I would just give them a call.

Congrats, alexsofluffy! Quick question, when did you turn in your application? I submitted it on the last day possible, I'm wondering if that'll make a difference in getting an acceptance/ rejection email

Hi Kay, I don't think it makes a difference...since I submitted it at the last minute as well lol

Maryk- do you know if last year they sent out all of the acceptance letters at the same time? I'm getting nervous over here!!

Thanks!

Hey Roro!

So last year, all of the community college transfer students got their acceptance letters and wait-list letters on the same day. A few days later, rejection letters went out.

I'm just not sure if it's the same thing this application cycle, because I have had several friends who applied and they haven't heard anything either. In fact, the only person who I've know received an acceptance letter is the previous poster :) So, I'm really not sure if they are doing it differently this cycle, and I wish I knew more! Good luck.. Keep us updated

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that :( same thing the counselor told me was that it wouldn't hurt either so I'm taking another year to have all my prereqs done... I'm also thinking of retaking classes I got Cs in because I have so much time. I heard there are more seats in the spring? What was your gpa and teas score if you don't mind me asking? I find it discouraging that they would say it wouldn't hurt your application but at the same time they do look at those and consider those who have them all completed... Which makes sense because they know how competent you are. It's just that false hope that it wouldn't hurt sucks.

My overall GPA is a 3.7, but my GPA based on what we filled out on the application is a 3.97. My TEAS score was 81.3. I'm so nervous about getting the decisions, which I heard should be sent out by next week.:nailbiting: Keeping my fingers crossed, and yes there are usually more seats available for students during the spring semester. Hope you get in! Good luck!

Just to let you guys know, having in-progress classes doesn't necessarily hurt you. I have 5 in-progress classes when I applied and was still accepted, so I think it's more case-by-case and they look at the entire applicant :)

Ok, I'm getting really nervous now that one person got an acceptance letter!! Has anyone else gotten acceptance/wait list/rejection letter??

I am patiently waiting. I emailed ------ on Thursday Oct. 31, I asked her when should we expect decision letters and she stated, "The decisions should be sent out by the second week in November." Fingers crossed, hope that helps. Congrats, alexsofluffy. We are all hoping to join you.
