Spring 2017 Chat

Published

Now that January is here, I thought I'd start a thread where we can support and encourage each other through our Spring semester, similar to our Fall thread, but with a bit more chit chat. What's your schedule look like? Any other goals you're working on?

I go back on the 17th, though I have a Phi Theta Kappa meeting on the 13th.

My schedule is:

A&P II

Microbio

Federal Government

World Religions

The last two are online.

Right now I'm trying to lose this holiday weight, so I've started running again (it burns). I graduate at the end of this year! In December I'll have my EMT-B certification and my Associates of Science in Biology. I'll also be applying to nursing school (application deadline is August 1), so it's going to be a really exciting (busy) year for me! I'm hoping to use my EMT-B cert to become an ED tech during the summers.

I look forward to chatting with you guys this semester!

I'm at the point where I'm pretty done with my pre-req's too. Just ready to move onto the next phase. Four more classes this summer and I'm officially done.

I'm hoping my EMT-B cert will get me in the ER. I want to see how I like it!

Overall, I would recommend the ED as a starting point for nursing students. Just because there's so many skills to practice: venipuncture, wound care, dressing changes/application, specimen collection, and once you get to learning IVs and you've been working there for a while, nurses may let you insert IVs with their supervision.

I still have physiology this summer then I'll be done with all the courses that aren't nursing courses, finally! I still plan on taking nutrition and maybe organic chem next summer to be ready for BSN apps.

That is so cool!! One day I might be in your shoes. I've been applying/interviewing for months for different tech spots to no avail. I think I might get this latest one though, they've had my app hanging in active consideration status since the interview. ED seems so wild to be a part of, I bet you are getting a ton of really cool experience! Did you get the mother baby spot??

What unit is it on? That's so exciting! :)

I don't interview for it until tomorrow but I've been waiting for weeks to even get a call back, so it's something lol

The position is in med/surg at a smallish (246 bed) hospital here. I initially applied for a prn listing, they called and I went to interview. The day of the interview they put up a full time spot, so I applied to that. They've since taken me off active consideration for the prn but it's still hanging in for full time. It's been nearly three weeks so I don't have a time of hope. I get a lot of phone interviews and I've even had several rounds of in person, just to get the slightly polite "thanks for your time but no thanks" email. Just spent four months doing at least four rounds of interviews for a unit secretary/pct job at a different hospital. So I think I'm close? I know they look at it as I have zero actual experience, I just graduated CNA in March. I'm resistant to go to LTC and get on boarded just to turn around and leave as soon as a hospital takes me on.

I can't get hired either. It doesn't help that I haven't worked in 11 years. Being a stay at home mom doesn't count for much on the job front.

Two tests down, two more to go this week. Then I'm blissfully free (to study) until next Wednesday. I take my last two finals, then I graduate. I. Can't. Wait. to finally feel like I have something to show for all this hard work.

I feel you on that, I didn't work from the time I was 7 months pregnant with my oldest, until he was 9? Maybe 10. I only got a job because home depot would hire anyone with proper identification. I do have a friend that works at a hospital and she's like yeah if you take phlebotomy class I can get you on here.. which I was trying to avoid paying for another certification but if it's my only option...

I applied to a BUNCH of hospitals here, even non partners. Somebody, somewhere has to need PCTs bad enough to take on a green one, right? :o And I guess at the very worst, once we finish the first semester we can get in?

That's what I did. I applied for so many hospital jobs and didn't even get to the interview stage in any of them until I had exactly one year of nursing home experience. I'm not sure how it is where you live but we have several nursing school programs in the area so there's a lot of competition to get a coveted hospital job, especially with Ohio State's hospitals.

I got a 91 on the Micro test this morning, which means I need at least an 80 on the lab practical and the final, which I should not have an issue with. I have to get a 60 on my Government final to get an A. I can't figure out what I need for A&P because she's pretty behind on grading unfortunately.

I feel pretty relieved by that news.

Also if ONE more person tells me that I look tired, I'm going to lose it. Of course I look tired. I AM tired.

I had my neuroanatomy practical yesterday and got 100%! We have our lecture exam tomorrow and I'm kinda stressing a little bit because if you get As on all of the exams and practicals, you don't have to take the final. So tomorrow is make it or break it for me. haha I've really enjoyed the neurology section so I should be fine. But I'm definitely probably overstudying just because I reallllllly don't want to have to take the final. lol I have my last Micro practical on Thursday evening and our final in next Thursday. My Chem final is supposed to be next Thursday too but I'm taking it early on Monday just because I want to spread studying for both Chem and Micro out.

I wish this week was over already though because at least after Thursday I just have to study and not actually go to class. lol

I haven't been around in a couple of days I guess, I am getting really beaten down by stupid things that are out of my control. Every time I think I found a way to get all these pre reqs done by January, something tries to knock me down a peg or three. I'm just over it. I may get dropped from part of my summer classes for non payment, but I was told I had a certain due date, now they are saying it was already due and I just don't know. And if I can't get these done over summer, I'm out for BSN in spring, I can still do ADN (if I get accepted) but that's less convenient for my life.

I'm trying to find some positives in this. I did get a 91.8 in micro as my final grade so if I get an A in AP2, I'll get into honor society. That's something, right?

Every time an inconvenience happens in life, I've noticed that things eventually work out for the best. Don't get discouraged. Getting into honor society is an amazing feat :)

I had my last clinical for this semester, yesterday. I'm so happy it's over, I'm ready for hospital clinicals :) I had my skills lecture exam yesterday and I'm so anxious to find out whether I passed but I won't find out until Friday. I took my last lab competency today and felt I performed well. I also had my pharmacology final and believe I did well in that too.

Fall registration will be this coming Monday!
