Spring 2017 Chat

Published

Now that January is here, I thought I'd start a thread where we can support and encourage each other through our Spring semester, similar to our Fall thread, but with a bit more chit chat. What's your schedule look like? Any other goals you're working on?

I go back on the 17th, though I have a Phi Theta Kappa meeting on the 13th.

My schedule is:

A&P II

Microbio

Federal Government

World Religions

The last two are online.

Right now I'm trying to lose this holiday weight, so I've started running again (it burns). I graduate at the end of this year! In December I'll have my EMT-B certification and my Associates of Science in Biology. I'll also be applying to nursing school (application deadline is August 1), so it's going to be a really exciting (busy) year for me! I'm hoping to use my EMT-B cert to become an ED tech during the summers.

I look forward to chatting with you guys this semester!

For sure! It's all good!

For instance, my A&P2 class has been slowed down so much by people asking questions that would have been covered in primary school (US equivalent is grade school?) science, we don't actually have time to do our GI exam before the end of the semester, and we lose our mandated study day because we have to come in to play catch up. :/

That sounds so frustrating! The credits I've earned before starting at my CC were actually online or at a different college so I never had to experience taking basic courses like English, psychology, biology, etc. in person. So when I took math and anatomy in person at my CC, I was actually shocked at the questions some people would ask. Whoever said that there was no such thing as a stupid question... .-.

I go to university and I'm constantly surprised at how many classes are purely exam based or weekly quiz based. I thought it would be more papers and assignments and busy work? I don't know. Different everywhere, I guess.

Every semester I'm surprised when I look at the syllabi and most of my classes are based off exam grades. I don't think I've realized until I started taking science classes. English, math, humanities, etc. all seemed to be endless amounts of papers and assignments. Whereas, the science courses and now, nursing classes I've taken are almost all just exams.

I am fairly obsessed with ST, yes, but I chose the name also because it's both halves of my birthday. Funny you put that together, I haven't come across many people familiar with the show. I can't WAIT for season 2.

Capa! Great news! It must be a relief to not have to worry about those finals. I haven't had that happen - yet. The sociology class I'm taking in the fall, he says in the syllabus that you can take the 15 weekly quizzes -or- the comprehensive final but if you take the final, it is your entire grade. Makes me a bit nervous! I will probably just elect not to take it!

I LOVE Stranger Things! I also love Fallout :)

I expected actual homework in college, but it's all quizzes and tests. I haven't had traditional "homework" since Chemistry last year. I take a lot of my classes online though, so I guess homework is moot.

I agree that there are a LOT of students in my classes that have me wondering how they will make it through nursing school. Basic math equations, roman numerals, and questions that are answered on the notes provided.

I had my last A&P II lab today - we finished up the reproductive system. I LOVE my teacher so much that I'm actually sad the class is all but over. During tutoring, she was explaining the privy parts and the vestibular gland and said "Ladies, if you haven't squirted, you haven't lived".

Two weeks from today I'll be a college grad!

It just occurred to me that once I finish this "contemporary mathematics" class in summer I, I'll have completed my associates requirements. I should have paid more attention, I could have gone to graduation. Haha!

I...yeah. I'm at a loss for words with some of the things I hear people ask or say. I'm not honestly sure how some of them are going to make into into or through nursing school. But as long as I'm not the one asking stupid questions, I just keep my nose down and power through.

I have an exam in micro and in a&p this week and procrastination is setting in. I'm going to miss micro, it's been a really fascinating class.

Today's daft question from A&P2: "So adipose turns fat into sugar?"

This person apparently passed A&P1 (they had to, to get into A&P2).

I don't mind when people are stuck on a concept, I devote a good chunk of my time to tutoring some of my classmates that need the help but this is ridiculous - it's constant. Around 25% of class time is wasted each session answering questions like this - bless the Professor, she does try to get people to understand... but still... You can lead a horse to water etc

I feel you there; I've loved everything about Micro, but I think I really lucked out by having a prof that is genuinely excited to teach the subject. She's a cranky old lass and she's awesome; it's hilarious to watch her get all giddy over slides :D Her passion for the subject really shows! It made the whole class so much more enjoyable; lectures were really engaging and the labs were a blast :D

I feel you on the procrastination front too.... 2 more exams to go next week and I can taste freedom - I'm getting a carrot cake from fresh market to celebrate on Wednesday, and then I'm going to hermit for a little bit... I need the break lol

Congrats Jen!!

And LMAO at your Professor! She sounds like a riot! hahaha

Bummed received a 67 on my lab cumulative exam, which is two 67 grades. Even if I am able to achieve an 80 to 90 on the next exam and a 80 or 90 on the final my overall grade will be between an 80 or 83.

Now in panic mode. As what is next.

I am going to finish hard for the next 2 weeks for AP.

Now have to see how the money is and how I can fundugle my schedule with work.

I'm about to leave for my first volunteer shift! I'm a little nervous - I wonder where they'll put me (they have me as a NICU volunteer, but I asked for the Microbiology lab).

I hate to say this, but I think the class is worth repeating. It's the foundation of most of your knowledge going into nursing school, as far as I've heard. Are you understanding things? Do you feel like you have a good grasp on the material?

I had a good grasp on AP2. I have a good grasp with nutrition, digestion, and cardiac. Respiratory, Endocrine, and Reproduction have an okay grasp on. Water balance, Urinary System, and Pregnancy iffy about.

A lot of errors on tge exam was spelling and gradpinh where thibgs were pointed out on the model.

I wouldn't mind taking the class over to help give a more solid background on the body. Just don't want to do that cat exam ever again.

I'm hoping to stay afloat in my Chem class. I'm killing it in lecture but in lab I feel lost in wonderland. It's like the expectations are higher and labs are much more complex with even less guidance!!! I hope I don't crash on my lab practical. We need at least a 60% to pass the class and even with my 97% average on my lecture exams I'm still really nervous about making tons of errors and flunking it. He told us today he flunked an entire class for a lab practical one semester.... I gulped hard....

How'd it go???

You'll be fine! Just remember everything you've learned and done so far in lab :)
