Hello everyone,
I haven't seen a Spring 2018 thread started for SPC nursing hopefuls so I decided to start one. I am very eager and anxious and I know a lot of you are too. So who else is applying for the Nursing program at St. Pete College for the spring?
A little bit about me. I have a BS in Psych and returning for nursing. I have all my prereqs completed and have a 3.66 GPA.. I have A's in all my sciences except Mirco Lab I have a B. I am super nervous about my GPA knowing that many others have better GPAs. I am holding out hope that other people will apply to other programs. Also historically the Spring is less competitive. I am hoping to get in for the night classes. The application opens on July 1st so we can apply in 3 days!!! Then wait for what will feel like forever. The suspense is already killing me.
Where are the rest of the SPC Nursing hopefuls? Sound off... 3..2..1.. GO!
Good!!! I was number 12 and got in on the first alternate acceptance day. Supposedly they actually leave 10 spots open automatically for alternates, and for errors on the actual acceptance list (peachez1 can vouch for this, if I remember correctly). That castle branch todo list is a pain. My recommendation to all alternates is to at least go get CPR and BLS certified right now... it's pretty much the only thing you can do since you guys don't have the forms to do the other stuff. You're not going to have as much time as everyone else to complete that list, so at least get that out of the way.
And remember, an alternate position doesn't mean you aren't good enough. It simply means you ARE good enough- there just aren't enough spaces right now for whatever reason.
Are we required to purchase scrubs through the program or do we purchase them on our own? Is there a certain color and/or do you recommend buying a few pairs? Thanks Paige_ for all of your tips thus far!
You have to purchase specific ones through scrubs and stuff. When considering how many ask yourself how often you want to do laundry. I only have time for laundry once a week so I bought 4. The undershirts can be purchased through them as well. Their dark blue and dark blue under shirt. Shoes have to be all white/ all black or all blue.

Thanks! I assume that more information on that will be given at orientation?
Thanks Level One-ers for being here to field our questions! I was hoping I could fire off a few to you guys as well:
1. If we are NOT BLS certified (basic CPR and AED, but not BLS), as someone who is NOT coming from a medical setting, is this something you'd suggest we knock out prior to starting?
2. If we wait until orientation to get the info on scrubs/uniforms/shoes, etc, was Scrubs and Stuff stocked enough to respond to the supply demands of the class? (I don't want to wait, only to show up directly after orientation and be told that they only have Xsmall :) )
3. Which number did you end up with on your clinical location preference?
4. For shoes; I know you said full black, white or blue. Do they need to also be a non-porous material? I've heard some places require you to have shoes that are more of a plastic-type/non-porous materials for accidental spills. (AKA - no canvas shoes). Is this something they cover in orientation?
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but in the meantime, if someone could provide some input on those items, it'd be incredibly appreciated!
Thanks so much in advance! And good luck, everyone!
1. You must be CPR/BLS certified through the American heart association. They'll require that you upload a copy of your card to castlebranch. So definitely get that out of the way asap.
2. I think you can wait. I waited until about a week before; i wear xsmall though, so I didn't have a problem lol.
3. I got my second choice. Like I mentioned, I was accepted as an alternate though.
4. I don't think they need to be non porous or non slip. I come from the restaurant industry though, so I went ahead and spent a pretty penny and got a pair of danskos... I know the value of well made, non slip, easy to clean shoes. I've seen other people with porous type material and want to vomit thinking about the amount of bacteria that's been tracked in to their cars and home. I've wiped mine down with bleach several times. But at the end of the day, this is 100% your choice.

AMAZING. Thank you SO much for the SUPER QUICK response and input, Paige! You're a life saver! (Figuratively AND literally, I guess, huh? Ah, bad puns. lol.) In all seriousness though; thank you very much for all of your advice!
