SPC Nursing Fall 2018

Published

Hey Everyone!

Thought I would be the first person to start a SPC Nursing Fall 2018 thread. Even though we still have one semester left before applying, I thought I would start a thread to get the ball rolling and to see where everyone stands. If are applying for the program in Fall of 2018, please let us know the amount of credits you will have at the time of applying and what your cumulative and program GPA's are. As for me, I will have 30 of 30 credits completed and a cumulative GPA of 3.9, with a program GPA of 4.0.

Specializes in NICU RN.
Hi Peachez! Sorry for all the questions, but I have one more for you! Is there any books on the required list that you think would be useful for the first semester but not for the second and so on? I looked up books on Amazon and to rent all of them would be about $180 cheaper than buying the package. However, I have heard we will be using these books throughout our entire nursing school experience so I don't want to rent them all over and over again. I know you're going into your third semester so you can't really speak for semester 3 and 4 yet, but did you use most of them in semester 2? Enough for it to be worth the extra money? Once again, thank you SO much for all your help, I really appreciate it. :)

So far (as I'm only in level 3) I've used most of the books in the package each semester. Level one you'll primarily use the Fundamentals one. Level 2 you'll primarily use the med surge book. But each text is used each semester for portions here and there.

For myself, I purchased the books because i wrote and highlighted the heck out of them!

Do we need to get a watch?

Yes! I am planning on getting the PRINT only package. I am really not a fan of ebooks. I am also getting one of those roller carts.

Do we need to get a watch?

I am assuming we will need a watch in order to do BP readings. Although, I use my phone mostly if I want to time something. If we do need one, I am glad I have a stash of old watches that I never wear anymore! LOL!

Any guys on here that can help with shoe selection? What are the most comfortable shoes to wear? I was looking at those Dansko shoes, but they are so ugly! Plus, I don't want to look like I am wearing heels. LOL! Also, what kind of stethoscope is everyone getting? I really like the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. and it is not too expensive. I am thinking of getting the BP cuff and penlight set from Amazon for $14.99. It is the "White Coat" brand.

Do we need to bring every single book to school for our first day?

I had MMR vaccine nearly 50 years ago. I had a titer for it about 2 years ago and I am still immune so they can last a long time. Don't be surprised if you are still protected.

Great! Congrats! Hope to see you tomorrow. My name is Kala btw

I was there. I may have met you. My name is Shelly. Met several LPN to RN students at orientation. Getting alot done this coming week on our list. Whew! Lots to do!

Don't worry about your shoes being ugly. None of us will mind. This is your very important career and you want to be comfortable at clinicals and out in the real world. Dansko's are supposed to be very comfortable. Littmann steths are excellent. I wanted to get one of those pimped out ones but afraid someone will steal it if I lay it down...nothing against the students. Even hospital staff at clinicals would be tempted by an expensive Littman steth. Any BP cuff and penlight should do.

I would, just to be on the safe side but that is nerdy me.

Most likely, they will want us wearing a watch. I know we had to for clinicals in LPN school. Just assuming though.

I am new to this forum so I am trying to get used to the quote thing, etc. so don't mind me if I reply to something but didn't actually reply to it...just posted a reply to no one. Doh. So I am so damn old, I have no idea where my vaccination records are but I did have titers for LPN school in early 2016. It showed that I was immune to everything we need to get checked for so you may think you are not immune after 20 years but that may not always be the case. You can be immune for a lifetime if you have a shot or had the disease. I had Chicken Pox as a kid over 40 years ago and it showed that I am still immune to it. FYI...I am concerned about this flu shot. The one and only time I had a flu vaccine about 6 years ago, I had an extremely bad reaction to it...yes, I was in mild anaphylactic shock too. For LPN school, I was the only person who would not get a flu shot so I had to wear a mask during clinicals. It sucked because those things get hot and sweaty after being there for a few hours. SPC may also have the same rules, no shot, wear mask but if they don't, I will be nervous. In that case, I will probably get the shot, take some Benadryl and have my husband (a retired RN) watch over me to make sure I don't bite the dust.

P.S. My husband just informed me that vaccines when I was a kid were a lot stronger than they are now. I am 51.
