SPC Nursing Fall 2018

Published

Hey Everyone!

Thought I would be the first person to start a SPC Nursing Fall 2018 thread. Even though we still have one semester left before applying, I thought I would start a thread to get the ball rolling and to see where everyone stands. If are applying for the program in Fall of 2018, please let us know the amount of credits you will have at the time of applying and what your cumulative and program GPA's are. As for me, I will have 30 of 30 credits completed and a cumulative GPA of 3.9, with a program GPA of 4.0.

I don't believe so, if everything is up to date.

So I may be late to the party to ask this question but do we need a titer?? I have all of my vaccinations and everything up to date but did not know if we needed to get a titer regardless. Thanks guys! So excited to meet you all tomorrow :)

As far as I can remember if you have proof of them that is all that matters. For myself my TDAP came from hospital records as I cut myself a few years prior and they gave me that in the ER. I sent that in and it was accepted. SO.. get your vacc records out. If you have proof of all that is required - awesome! If you don't you have to get titers as the proof that you're actually immune.

Congrats on getting in! Best of luck!!

This is from the Castle Branch site for the Hepatitis B requirement:

One of the following is required:

A positive antibody titer (lab report required)

Only a positive titer is acceptable.

OR

signed declination form.

Declination form is available to download, print, complete and upload to this requirement.

So, I suppose if you decline then you don't have to get this titer. Then there is the TB test gets a little tricky (I'm sure you reviewed all of those requirements). If you are up to date on everything else, I would assume you are good until the new flu shot is available.

I spoke with Kathy from the college of nursing yesterday and she said titers are a better record and it's better to have them to know you'll be protected when working with patients but she told me all you really need to upload to castlebranch is the original vaccinations you received as a kid. So that's up to you. She also said on that physical sheet that needs to be filled out, for the records of the titers, your practitioner can put something like "obtained records elsewhere" instead of dates and such. Varicella and MMR are usually good for up to 20 years but the protection seems to wear off after that. :)

For first semester I purchased the book only package that was taped up in a huge box. We basically used them ALL at one point in the semester or another.

The ones that were well loved in first semester are: Nursing Fundamentals, drug guide, and nursing diagnosis handbook. Does that mean ONLY purchase those books - nope. I did use all the books in the package in either first or second semester. I just used those ones mentioned the most in first semester. I also purchased other study books as well to better prepare me for exams. The books are EXPENSIVE - but no worries you'll be purchasing more a few more specific books each semester as well.

My suggestion - get the books. Don't skimp out on the books. You are going to use these books like no other courses in the past. Pre-req's are done. This is your future career. Don't short change your education - it's not worth it in the long run.

Hi Peachez! Sorry for all the questions, but I have one more for you! Is there any books on the required list that you think would be useful for the first semester but not for the second and so on? I looked up books on Amazon and to rent all of them would be about $180 cheaper than buying the package. However, I have heard we will be using these books throughout our entire nursing school experience so I don't want to rent them all over and over again. I know you're going into your third semester so you can't really speak for semester 3 and 4 yet, but did you use most of them in semester 2? Enough for it to be worth the extra money? Once again, thank you SO much for all your help, I really appreciate it. :)

I think I'm getting the titers first, just to see what antibodies that I still have. I received immunizations like over 20 years ago, so the chances that I'll need new ones are high. The titers will show what I need. I know I had chicken pox twice as a kid, so I should have the antibodies for that! Lol!

That's what I did. I have a full page of immunizations that I received from my doctor's office and Kathy said if the titers come back negative for any reason I can just upload those original vaccinations and I'd still be good to get in the program, but she recommended that I follow up with my doctor and get re-immunized just to be safe. I was freaking out because the health department told me the titer results wouldn't be back for 2-3 weeks and I saw that the MMR and varicella shots need to be done 28 days apart and it needed to be uploaded into castlebranch before 8/13 and I was terrified I wouldn't have enough time to get both shots done and uploaded if my titers were negative. But the original vaccinations will do.

I had to send away for my records in another state and hopefully they will have them since it's been years. Hopefully I receive them soon!

She said the actual compliance date for everything is 8/17 so you've got about a month. :)
