I'm sorry, but with our severe nursing shortage, it just HACKS ME OFF when our patients complain about their
foreign nurses having an accent. Sometimes I just want to say "yknow what.....be glad you HAVE A NURSE to care
for you at all !" I am just SO tired of it.....if it's THAT bad, the patient should just ask the nurse to WRITE things......:typing..
No, I'm not foreign nor do I have an accent..........I am just SO TIRED of our patients complaining about that.
Yes, they're sick and they don't want to have to "work" to understand staff, but if they realized how BADLY
we need nurses, they might rethink how rude their comments are!
I was also appalled hearing a doctor speak to a foreign nurse VERY rudely due to her accent.....get over
yourself, doctor!
Yea they did teach some english in Philippines in school. It is hard to learn 5 different languages at the same time. Can you learn 5 different languages at school? I don't think so. Even spanish language gives you hard time. I'm just saying that some patients are making fun of my accents...I can speak english well but my problem is my grammar. I need to improve it coz it sucks when "racist" people tries to make fun with me coz I'm NOT AMERICAN....lol..and they would ask me to go back to where I came from....
If patients are complaining that they cannot understand your english, that is not being racist or making fun of your accent. That is the patient making an honest request to have their rights at understanding their careplan and the education needed to get well and stay well honored. It is an awesome feat that you can speak 5 languages, but it does not excuse you from your obligation as a nurse in the US to effectively communicate with your patient. If you can learn 5 languages, perhaps you missed your calling as a linguist???

You sound a little angry there...although everyone has an accent of some type, learning to speak clearly, without an accent that keeps you from being understood, would be the goal. Calm down and don't get so worked up....nothing is wrong with an American accent IN America :icon_roll
Well, your perception is your perception, and you have no idea of my mood, so I'll skip that one. I also did not say that there was anything wrong with an american accent, so I'm not sure what your point is there.
The poster did not say "learning to speak clearly, without an accent that keeps you from being understood" - they said learning to speak without an accent.
I am proud of my accent. I can't control if people understand me or not. I am a native English speaker who has worked in three countries and never had a problem with making myself understood. However, if someone is totally ignorant or used to only their regional accent and can't understand someone who doesn't speak like they do, then that is their problem and not mine.
or used to only their regional accent and can't understand someone who doesn't speak like they do, then that is their problem and not mine.
If the patient is only used to their regional accent and you are the nurse it IS your problem. The responsibility to be understood rests on the health care provider. Not the patient.
LOL I'm cracking up here because I'm from Texas and get crap about my Texas accent all the time....But, you should have heard me try to communicate with my Grandfather from the Bronx when he was alive....we both just smiled and nodded alot. And Earle - don't you know that everyone from West Texas has the gift of gab??? They never meet a stranger....hehe.Yang
The gift of Gab or the gift of fooey . I'm also slightly hearing impaired and accentuate my speech with sign language. When I get going the breeze is blowing. I also host parties to sell uhh merchandise. You should hear the things I say and what I sign to keep up with my speech.
I agree with the need for people to be able to communicate effectively, but I do think those complaints are sometimes out of line just because I have yet to meet a nurse whose accent was intolerable or so thick one could not understand it.
Now, nursing students, that is quite another story. Sometimes I worry that they dont have enough English going on, but just the same I appreciate how difficult school must then be for them.
If they are deaf, should I learn sign language?
Funny you say that. I took sign classes right before entering the nursing program. I planned on finishing the sign language program too. I couldnt though, nursing was too difficult for me to continue the sign classes. I want to go back and take sign again though. Maybe become an interpreter on the side.

Iam, you would get a kick out of seeing my blind daughter sign...she's a riot
How the hell can you become a nurse, or even get HIRED as a nurse without being able to communicate effectively with your clients?
I am a foreing NS from Brazil, and when i was interested in starting school here, to begin with i had to pass the toefl test, english proficiency, then i had to take speech! comp, lit... etc... I am all for being able be understood by your client, other wise how can you do your teaching? interactions??? Although i do carry a little accent (have improved a lot)...
I just have to admit, that 98% of the time i am completely understood, although there are those 2% who just by catching my accent, either assume that i hispanic, and start talking spanish, or get mad!!! and want some body else!
