Some nurses seriously need their head examined

Nurses General Nursing

Have you ever been in a situation where you simply want to tell another nurse to kindly remove themselves from your presence before I start raising my voice?

A few days ago I was involved in a case where my patient had their member and a testicle removed. Not very pleasant at all, this patient is terminal and the procedure was to give him extra time.

You would think this patient should be treated with dignity and respect wouldn't you?

The clinical nurse in charge of this clinic announced to the entire operating room that 'he deserves it for not washing himself properly'...............................

Ummm where do I start? At the time I was just speechless. I should have told them to refrain from making disrespectful comments. Instead I stewed about it which isn't healthy but at the time I was incapable of speaking to them without using curse words.

This was wrong on so many levels. I have a sister who is undergoing chemo, for someone to say anyone deserves cancer is personal to me. We had a nursing student in the room, now they go back and tell their preceptor and students how heartless we all are. It's hard enough to gain respect from surgeons, no wonder they think we're stupid when someone makes a comment like that it reflects on ALL of us. And of course how you can stand their and look at such a horrendous wound and make a comment really is just mind boggling.

I haven't had a chance to speak with this person but I'm going to. I'm going to let them know that their comment was disturbing, inappropriate and has really offended me. And I will tell them that in future maybe they should show some leadership and maturity by treating their patients with respect.

I just cannot understand all of this. I've cried all weekend over this incident.

I'm still a student for 8 more weeks (woot!) and I did an observation in the OR. Guy had a prior BKA and was having another due to complications. After the procedure, the CRNA lifts both of his stumps and says, "I can't feel mah legs!" - i'm not uptight or can't take a joke but that was crap, especially in front of a student.

A tough situation for you. I understand not saying something at the time for fear of letting your anger then make you the inappropriate one, but through the years I have found that a harsh look (one that can kill) and a harsh "hey your out of line" can get the point across and shut someone up pretty quick! I would definitely follow up with this individual though.

Good luck

I had a post op pt recount an entire conversation between a surgeon and an anesthesiologist regarding a shared vacation once. And she knew details. Since then, I have been very careful about what I say in the presence of anesthesized pt.

Agree with stern look and "You are out of line..." to this fool.

And you need to definitely learn to speak up at the moment, would have saved you much crying over the weekend off. Another thing is to consider "the source" of the comment: it obviously came from a fool, and fools are not worth wasting brain chemistry on.

Perhaps a one-word reply, "Harsh!".

One can really only pity someone who could say such an unkind remark, for their heart must be cold and full of hatred.

Wow, that will go into my memory as one of the most horrifying statements I've ever heard about.

I really hate that ever happened. How could someone be soooo ? evil? That is horrifying.

this is horrible. some people have no compassion, whatsoever. as a nursing student, it's important to know that i must diligently distinguish between great nurses and poor ones. this is the only way students, like myself, can acquire the kind of mentors worth having.

Be CAREFUL how you handle this situation! In theory you are correct, but in actuality sometimes you are seen as the villan. It's disgusting that this is so in too many cases. If you depend on your health insurance and wages, pay check to pay check- Think it over. Either confront the employee OR turn her in. Don't do both. Say nothing to any one else or risk being branded the traitor. I would turn her in and say nothing to anyone. That's the correct way despite the consequences.

That's really cruel. No matter what they think, a human being deserves the basic respect.

I'm sorry about your sister.

Wishing you the best,

All I can say is that you're a WAY better person than me for holding back. I know it's mean-spirited, but I've said it before and I'm saying it again - some people are just Too Stupid To Live.

I hope you let her have it AND report her, she must have someone above her. Unbelievable. Please tell me the patient was at least asleep and did not hear this imbecile.

Come on, it wasn't worth all that. She made a dumb remark. May that be the worst she ever does, the worst the OP ever hears. OP is wearing her heart on her sleeve because her sister is sick and I am truly about that and hope her sister does really well. But I do not think that a stupid remark by one nurse reflects badly on all nurses or agree that it was so terrible for the students to hear. They got a dose of reality, that's all.

That said, maybe the one who said it needs a little talking to - but not firing, being reported, anything like that.

What a dumb thing to say.

You have failed the allnurses.com hyperbole requirement. Your proper response would equate this event to the Holocaust, nuclear war, etc. Bonus points for "I would never want (the person described) to care for me or my loved ones."

Your post was the single worst post ever on the internet. You are a horrible nurse and I'd never want you to care for me or my loved ones, and you are setting a horrible example for all student nurses (bless their sweet little souls) everywhere.

^^^^^see, like that.

Oh, and I LOL'd at the "feel my legs" joke, but I did feel a little bad after.
