This was just posted on the face book page OHio RN to BSN Forum
The Ohio Board of Nursing recently made changes to licensure requirements that included the mandatory addition of a clinical experience into Ohio University's curriculum. Due to this change, we have had to temporarily discontinue offering the RN to BSN completion program to residents outside of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia.Because of these changes, we will not be able to admit you to the RN-BSN program at this time. If we have made a mistake and you do reside in one of the above listed states, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can work with you to reopen your application.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused you and the delay in your education. A refun... d of your application fee will be sent to your home address in 8 to 10 weeks. Your application will be kept on file in the event that we are able to reopen the program to residents of your state.
If you have any future questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call our office.
I emailed the school of nursing about this. I'll post here if they respond.I'm in PA and have 1 nursing class left and 3 general classes. I will be furious if I wasted time and money and those classes don't count. I'm pretty sure they can't do that though. Sounds rather illegal? I am sure the people who are already enrolled will be exempt. At least i hope so!
Doesn't it say that PA is safe? I live in Pa too and will be annoyed
I bet the issue is that they can't find or monitor clinical sites around the country. Other On line programs ( like resp tech) have created an agreement with programs where the student lives to do the clincial component and an affilitation agreement.
But I'm bummed even though I am in Ohio, b/c a clinical is not something that I was anticipating. I don't have enough time in my day as it is... this just sucks..
The OBN needs to consider the needs of the working RN in these completion programs.
I live in NY too. NY has a thing about out of state online programs having to be approved in order to get licensure. I know quite a few programs will NOT admit NY residents, and I think Illinois may be another one. I wasn't worried about it for my BSN because it wasn't affecting any licensure.
There are programs that are very similar to the OU program...so maybe they can transfer? Surely they will allow those who are already enrolled through the current program.
Yes...I think they will absolutely let those already accepted and enrolled finish the program. I don't think the Ohio board of nursing was trying to say otherwise.
As for transferring. Most programs want you to have a certain amount of hours completed at their school. It would be very unusual for them to accept BSN level nursing classes from another program.
Unfortunately, Western governors does require clinicals. I interviewed with them for the RN-BSN bridge. I live in Ohio and had plans to start OU but if they're requiring clinicals I may reconsider as this was the main selling point with me. My desire is to get my BSN completely online. I hope somewhere out there is a program that can give me what I need
There are hundreds of RN to BSN programs on line that do NOT require clinicals. Western Governors, U of Phoenix just to name two. Many, many more out there. So, what makes OU special?
U of P did require "clinicals" referred to as a practicum in their program. I don't know if they still do or not. When the recruiter for OU came to our facility to sell the program, their claim to fame was that it was the only program--at least in the area--that did not require some kind of clinical experience.
Initially this program was for working RNs and I wonder if that is how they got around clinical requirements? Due to the economy, I am not sure everyone in the program is now working. Totally a guess on my part but you have to wonder what happened?
It isn't the program - it is the individual states' BONs that are driving this. There is an article from the ANA that discusses what is going on. This isn't JUST OU - it is all distance programs with out of state students.
