So I'm fired. Again.

I must be the worst nurse in the world.

Now I need to figure out my next step. And it isn't nursing.

No specific reason. They think I "could" be unsafe.

Pffft.

The thing I've noticed about Sue since I've been reading this site is that she's about as up front and forthcoming as she could be.

She doesn't need us to be critical; she's hard enough on herself already. So my point is,knowing this, we should take her word that they gave no specific reason, and support her!

Perhaps you will better understand the politics of the healthcare profession once you actually start to work in it.

No offense meant by that.;)

I am a nurse, too, so I do understand what you all are saying. I am a med surg nurse working in a large suburban hospital. My job is not easy, but it is rewarding, and I know that if I were to be fired from one job, you can be sure that I would take it as a learning experience and never let it happen again.

Heathervet:

I am new to this bb and have found nothing but support, even with differences of opinion. When that happens it happens with respect to the OP and to each other, IMO It helps bring out the bad (vent) and a person can let the good feelings come in. All in the name of support.;)

Can we really say never is going to happen again? IMO you never know!

and I know that if I were to be fired from one job, you can be sure that I would take it as a learning experience and never let it happen again.

if someone in a position of authority/seniority, happens to not like you (for whatever reason), there's a strong chance that you can and will be fired.

many an experienced and exemplary nurse, has been fired or railroaded out of their place of employment, for a myriad of unethical, unfounded, unsupported reasons.

please, do not be so naive that all terminations are fair and warranted.

there's a good chance, you will find yourself on the sidewalk, scratching your head, thinking "wth???????"

it happens.

oh boy, does it.

Well I can't be so naive as to think it will never happen to me, and I am lucky to have had the experiences that I have had as an RN so far. Suesquatch, I hope you find the right fit for you, and I am sorry if I have offended you. Please know that I understand nursing is never easy, but soooo rewarding when you find what you are looking for. I hope you find that. There are too many types of nursing not to. Seek and ye shall find, right. Thanks for your input, gang.....

Hi Sue, Maureen61 here.............. I confess to not reading the whole thread. What did your employer base this on? Sorry this has happened to you and I know your health care system is much different than ours up north of the border.

I have just joined allnurses.com and you are the first person I am writing to. Sorry it is under these circumstances. I too have been let go from my first position after only 2 months. I am told that I was kind to my patients and that I wasn't dangerous, I was simply "slow". I was trying to do what I learned in nursing school.....be the patients advocate. Teach them, tell them about their meds, answer questions. Aparently, there is no time for that. Still...I do not regret being with a patient who was a DNR who they said didn't speak, who talked to me! What if he had wanted to change his mind!?! They would just enter the room and talk around and over him: "don't worry about it....he's a DNR". I am not, nor do I ever want to be the kind of nurse that they wanted in that department. So....to you my new friend....know others care and please feel free to contact me directly if you can to "chat". I do not know if that is possible or how to do it at this point since I am new. Seems that there is a lot that I do not know, but I can tell you this....I will be much happier somewhere else and I truly believe that there is something out there for each of us, it is truly a struggle to find it sometimes. The nurses that do find their niche are the ones that make a difference, they really stand out. That is why I am not giving up just yet...got into this profession to make a difference, and I want it to be a POSITIVE difference. OK....enough about me. Right now, you, although I don't know who you are, are the only one that I think can understand me and my frustrations. Thanks for your honest post.

Thanks, all.

Maureen, they gave me no reason other than I wasn't fitting in, I could be unsafe, I said weird things (I called someone a "poor old thing"), and I wasn't picking up quickly enough.

Heather, I have no doubt at all that I am a flawed individual and nurse. I do not, however, plan to keep explaining myself to you or those who have thanked you for questioning me. Believe me or not.

Sue..we are ALL flawed individuals babe! You have support here, in this terrible situation you are in! Just keep being who you are...you are a good person and good things will return to you! Dont let any negative stuff bring you back down..just be you!

Do you think there was some age discrimination going on there?

absolutely any nurse has the potential to possibly be unsafe, that is a bunch of BS, please don't take it personal & don't give up on nursing, so sorry that happened to you.
