So Happy To Be Out Of Nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Reasons why:

  • Useless, tedious online education modules
  • Chaos from COVID
  • Lack of adequate staffing
  • Hammering nurses with meaningless requirements
  • Gaslighting by management
  • Masks never going away
  • Ridiculous accreditation efforts by ignorant regulators and management
  • Mind numbing charting
  • Neglect and disregard of wellbeing of frontline workers
  • Escalation of above since Covid

FYI, I have died and gone to job Heaven and will be starting my new job at the farm store in October. I have been promised no stress, and will not be required to wear a mask! Not only that, I'll get an employee discount!

I've been a CNA for many years and a nurse for 6. Between the continued abuse from my nurse manager, the turmoil from the pandemic, short staffing, lack of equipment and no support from my employer, I can honestly say I've had enough. I've been on interviews for different jobs that interest me (that I'm qualified for) recently and will have no remorse when it's time to give my notice. I'm done.

What areas/fields are you thinking of moving into?

Specializes in Gyn.

I've been offered a position in a small office doing some minor accounting and office work. M-F 9-5, no worries about being short staffed or being bullied. A difference in pay but at this point, it's totally worth it.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I float to different places of employment working PRN and I can tell you hospital nursing is a drag. Won’t do it often, hate it when I’m there.

I love hospice and LTC. More personalization with the patients and employees. Better working conditions, less stress. I get to be around the elderly which is a joy to me, because in my field I don’t have to poke and prod them for no reason. It breaks my heart seeing aging adults wasting away in hospital beds when they should be at home enjoying the rest of the tIme they have left.

hospital nursing is for the birds. We need an overhaul of the system now. No more keeping people there that shouldn’t be. A 98 year old on a heparin drip? An 87 year old going in for a pacemaker ? A 92 year old post CABG?

Same goes for crummy employees. The worst nurses haunt their halls and whine and stomp their feet like deranged preschoolers when they don’t get their way. This causes the work environment to be a bummer and management makes the problem worse.

Specializes in Vascular access.

Can I add to the list:

Layers of pencil pushing office staff

Ridiculous JCHAO Certifications

Endless task lists of busy work

Being treated like trained monkeys

Micromanagement

New nurses being trained to "tell" on everyone for every little perceived thing

Yeah- hey @Emergent, are you, like going to join an website that cators to farm store workers? I wonder what such a website might be called? allfarmstoreworkers.com?

Will "Farmette" be your username?

There could be different forums, like Feed & Seed or TractorsRus. Maybe there'll be forums for support for employees manipulated by farm tools. Of course, you won't be one of them.

There's a couple of farm stores near me, one in Cowville and the other in Anomaly. The one in Anomaly was a Venture store where I worked in Health & Beauty in '75 and '76.

Venture was a big discount store back in the 70's. The building now houses a Farm & Home, Harbor Freight, and a Chinese Restaurant. Venture was a 70's Walmart, with just a little more class.

Ironically, the Walmart in my hometown was built on the old Alfalfa Queen Farm, established in 1894. I remember the first time I walked into that Walmart and could tell you where I bought asparagus at the farm. It was where the makeup section is now.

Okay. Enough about that. Please do keep us informed of your adventures at the farm store.

Or just post them on allfarmstoreworkers.com. I'll become a member!

I'm horribly confused now. I need answers.

Specializes in Rehab/Nurse Manager.

Congrats!

Have to say I'm a bit envious.  I'm nowhere near retirement age, but am looking forward to the day when I can also say I'm no longer in nursing.

Any tips on speeding up the next 30-35 years so my retirement gets here faster? LOL.

Good luck with your future endeavors.  Sounds as if you found something you will enjoy!

Yes. Find something you really like to do and do it on the side.

I'm guessing the "farm store" where Emergent's going to work is like a Farm & Home or a Rural King. These retail stores sell equipment and goods mainly for farmers and gardeners.

They sell merchandise that the regular Joe might use, to more specific goods for farmers, such as livestock feed and fencing. They're great stores that a guy like me likes, with chainsaws, welding equipment, hardware, tools, and motorbikes, but also cater to gals like my Belinda. She loves to look at the lawn ornaments, outdoor furniture, and clothing section.

It's one of the few stores that I don't mind going to with Belinda who is always "just looking" for extended periods of time.

Perhaps Emergent will chime in and give us more specifics, LDT.

One thousand times YES!

After the newness of not having to spend time preparing for work, working, and winding down from work, plus regular TCB, one will find there are many hours in the day.

I understand now why those who have no real outside interests continue to work even though they could comfortably retire. After having to deal with, say, a high stress job like nursing, we must have something on which to focus our energy and time.

I strongly encourage anyone planning to retire to find an interest that you love and can do endlessly. I am a social recluse, go into town about once a week, and keep busy every day of my waking hours with TCB, art, working out, and bicycling.

And in accordance with what LDT said, "find it", start doing it now, and make it the foundation of your time, something you can always do anywhere.
