Okay so hers the story. I worked in a nursing home for the last fifve months. For three of those months i hace been the only aid to be followed around by a nurse to make sure my residents were cleaned. I was never written up for it never had any training or suspended. My ADON told me that i had several complaints against me for my residents not being clean before i left, but no corrective action has ever been taken.

So yesterday i clocked out for my lunch and left. There were five othrr aids and four nurses on the floor all total.

My work called me and threatened patient abandonment, jail and a huge fine. Can they do it if i clocked out for lunch and left?

I cleaned everyone before i left, made the beds and took out the trash.

Can anyone give me some advice?? Much appreciated!!!

I wont blame them if they did....i cant hamdle the horrors of yhe nursing homes. Ive been in th ft ee and jave had to be a whistle blower before.....its not worth the horror stories and nightmares and tears....im giving up on human medical all together.....i cant do the stress anymore

Hmm... Ok, so if you left and didn't return, then that can be considered abandonment. I doubt it is jail worthy though. It doesn't matter if there were 5 aides or 1; you still left for the day without telling anyone you wouldn't be returning. Was this a spur of the moment decision or planned?

Why didn't you just give notice and quit if you were unhappy with the job?

It's called being an adult and turning in your resignation even if it was effective immediately. If a patient/resident was harmed by your willful abandonment there could be a criminal investigation. Some states will find you. This will have the potential to affect your future career even if it is not in "human medical"

The didn't come back part is the problem!!

Yes, and that part was conveniently left out of the OP. This is textbook patient abandonment.

OP, you left for lunch so the expectation was that you would be returning in 30 min or an hour, however long your lunch break is.

Simply walking off the job is patient abandonment and incredibly immature. This will likely follow you throughout your career.

Also, loose is the opposite of tight, lose is the opposite of win.

Yea i told my charge nurse i was going to lunch then clocked put and didnt come back

I can't tell you what's going to happen, but I can tell you I think you SHOULD lose your certificate. That was very irresponsible of you.

Yeah, there's always more to the story than we initially get told ... Yes, OP, leaving for lunch and not coming back actually is "abandonment," and that can have serious consequences. Bad idea.

Um, you didn't come back? That's a vital piece to your story. Me thinks THAT'S why they are threatening you with what they are. You can't "loose" your certification. Do you REALLY think that the courts have time to JAIL people for doing what you did? Not coming back was a big mistake.

It sounds like you are making a good decision to not be in healthcare. I would be shocked if they jailed you for it. I just can't see that happening.

Do you not see that what you did was incredibly wrong not to mention irresponsible?

Honestly have never heard of this happening, but yeah this was horrible. To let not only your coworkers down but your residents as well. You can't make everything about you, you are getting paid to provide a service to those in need never forget that

Had a coworker tell us once she was clocking out and going to McDonald's. She never came back. It became a running joke, whenever someone was getting stressed or overwhelmed we'd say "Uh oh, she's about to head to Mickey D's."

its not abandonment if you told someone you were leaving the premises and there were enough people to care for the patients. Its just a crappy thing to do because your patients are the ones who suffered from your irresponsibility.
