NICOTINE TAR CONTAINS OVER 4000 CHEMICALS including ammonia, formaldehyde, orificenic, butane, hydrogen cyanide, lead, mercury, vinyl chloride, methane AND vast quantities of carbon monoxide.
Nicotine is a colorless, odorless, organic-based alkaloid in the same family as cocaine, morphine, quinine and strychnine. It is a super toxin. Now I know it is legal and so is alcohol, but how can this be allowed in the workplace. It has to effect judgement. please I need feedback, because I have a hard time with this at work.
RE: The smoking daughter. I posted some links that have some great ways to approach it. I think it is on my post on page 2 of this thread. Also go to wowio.com and do a search for smoking- there are several books you can download for free and they are good. I am reading them now in hopes of receiving some help with my addiction. Also bombard her with anti smoking stuff! Get pamphlets, info, ANYTHING and put them on her bed or door every single day!! Get some graphic photos of ppl dying of smoking and also of cancerous lungs. Keep it up and dont give up on her!!!
kukukajoo, I'm sorry, but Iv'e had all this. I absolutely know the risks, no leaflet is going to make me stop, if my kiddos tellin me doesn't. The MOST important people in life, to me, and I let them down when I step out the back door to have that ciggie. The most perverse thing is, the more they go on, makes me stressed= makes me want to smoke. it is perverse, I know it.
You *can* quit smoking. No, it's not easy. Yes, it's the hardest thing you'll ever do. Most people who successfully quit do so after several unsuccessful attempts. As with many difficult things, you try, you fall on your face, you pick yourself up and dust yourself off and try again. You can do it!!!!

i do agree with this.
i've been hypnotized, worn patches AND chew the nicotine gum, quit through 4 full pregnancies, joined support groups...
now i cough upon awakening...
probably close to an hour.
i HATE, HATE, HATE what it's doing to me.
and i'm starting to feel a tinge of desperation.
one of these days, i will succeed.

My husband uses oral tobacco . . . he stopped for 5 years early in our marriage and then started up again. It is a real stress issue for him.
NOTHING but his own decision will make him stop. Our older kids used to beg him when they were little. His parents prayed for him. I nagged him and wouldn't kiss him. Now our 6 year old hides his cans from him and begs him too. But still, he uses .. . . .
His job is stressful - without the "fix" of tobacco I think he'd go crazy.

This was for the woman who found out her teenaged daughter was smoking.......
My friend is trying this or something similar, but I've heard the same sort of negative stuff about it as kukukajoo. And my dreams are WAY too weird already, without adding to the night terrors even more! Just have to stick a patch over my mouth!! (which I'm sure would please the hubs no end!!!)
I've heard these things too, but I have been on Chantix for 2.5 weeks and it is working for me. I do not get "freaky" dreams like everyone warned me about. It is just working for me. I am turning 40 this year and have smoked more than half of my life. I needed help, but didn't want to just replace nicotine with nicotine, so I am trying this. I have not had a cigarette in 2 weeks and have about 2 really memorable urges to smoke per day, which is tolerable. I had a very slight stomach upset for about 1 hour after I started the 1mg/twice per day dose which starts on day 8, but that stopped after a couple of days and no longer happens. I suppose I just got used to that dose. I am willing to try just about anything to stop smoking, except to continually put more nicotine into my body. I chose chantix because it helps break the not only the addiction to nicotine, which is gone within a couple of days after quitting, but also the "habit". I'll let you all know how it goes. This time I really am ready to quit... even though I am taking my boards in 3 days, I have been able to do this.:w00t:
For the person who was wondering about how things would change when her hospital goes smoke-free, things may not change as much as you think. The hospital I work at recently went smoke-free, so employees now leave the premises in their personal cars (e.g. drive around the block) to smoke. So, there are fewer personnel available on the floor if there is an emergency. As far as visitors, they pretty much ignore the rule if they want to. Our security doesn't intervene; supposedly it is our job as employees to tell people to stop smoking and go buy themselves a stop smoking aid.
People will find ways to circumvent the rules if it is important enough to them.

Good luck to you on quitting smoking and on your boards!!! I too quit using the "pill" method, although I used Wellbutrin (aka Zyban), a lot of people forget about that one, but it worked extremely well for me! Took it for 6 months and been smoke-free for 8 months now!

Congratulations on your success! That is fantastic. And thank you, I am looking forward to getting the "big test" over. I have studied so much I am just plain sick of it. I used to smoke so much while studying. I gave a med/surg book to a friend and he almost died from the smell of smoke reeking from the book. He asked me if I put out my cigarettes in the book. I wanted to die!! I have been doing great, even while studying. I feel a whole lot better now when I wake up in the morning. :)

As a cardiovascular nurse, I see the effects of smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and poor eating habits every day. I have lost loved ones as a result of smoking related illness. While I do not hate those that smoke, I do hate smoking.
