NICOTINE TAR CONTAINS OVER 4000 CHEMICALS including ammonia, formaldehyde, orificenic, butane, hydrogen cyanide, lead, mercury, vinyl chloride, methane AND vast quantities of carbon monoxide.
Nicotine is a colorless, odorless, organic-based alkaloid in the same family as cocaine, morphine, quinine and strychnine. It is a super toxin. Now I know it is legal and so is alcohol, but how can this be allowed in the workplace. It has to effect judgement. please I need feedback, because I have a hard time with this at work.
I'm a smoker, hate the smell, but i do it anyway, trying to quit but thats another story. anyway it takes me just a few minutes to smoke, i go out twice during my 8 hour shift, once at lunch and smoke one, and once at break and smoke one. i'm back before my 30 minute lunch is up and only take about 10 at break if that. these nurses that leave for 30 minutes are ignorant and are ruining our breaks for the rest of us. and for those of you who don't smoke and say you don't get a break thats your own fault. say i'm taking a break and walk away, just like we do. there problem solved :)
Chantix gave me the worst GI issues I have ever had. It has also been linked to suicidal thinking and risk recently. Not to mention the weird dreams that many people have- almost psychotic. This stuff changes your brain chemistry.despite my problems with it, I would still recommend trying it but only under close medical supervision with the knowledge of warnings to report immediately to the doctor.
My friend is trying this or something similar, but I've heard the same sort of negative stuff about it as kukukajoo. And my dreams are WAY too weird already, without adding to the night terrors even more! Just have to stick a patch over my mouth!! ( which I'm sure would please the hubs no end!!!)
ewwwww!!!I don't use any sprays period. I know I'm inhailing the stuff and would rather not take any chances. Same with powders.
Here here! Why risk getting this "stuff" up your nose, in your eyes, on your skin? Almost as bad as the cigarette smoke! BLAAAH! DISGUSTING! I would feel queer "deoderising" myself in such a way!
Nat.
Nurses know better than most people how bad smoking is and how hard it is to quit. I never started, thank goodness, but have watched co workers over the years struggle with method after method and still remain addicted to cigarettes. I can only conclude that it must be one of the hardest things in the world to quit, especially when one is out in the world and a pack is available anywhere within half an hour from a 24 hour minimart.
Hospitalized patients were a captive audience and easier, though. I always assumed they knew all the reasons they needed to quit and told them as much, to consider themselves lectured. The ones who were interested in quitting (the majority, actually) would call me back into the room later in the shift to ask questions about what was available to help and that's when I did my teaching. If there were no medical contraindications, I tried to get nicotine patches for the ones who had no intention of quitting, just to keep them a little more comfortable.
Other people's problems, including smoking, are none of my business unless either they ask for my help or it's part of my job. I did appreciate one co worker who'd spray herself down with Febreze after a smoke break so she wouldn't gross out her patients. I thought that was incredibly compassionate!
In answer to nurses knowing how bad smoking is for you...yes of course we who take the evil stick do know full well. Tryin to quit, well thats another matter entirely.
I grew up as the child of smokers..hated it with a passion, never in my life smoked a cigarette till I was 27 years old. And I hid it from my Dad for 2 years. But once it gets you, hooked you are. Wish I never had had any at all!

I should make my daughter read this thread . . .she denied smoking for months until I found photos of her smoking, on MY computer. :icon_roll
She says it is only one or two and never every day. I've given her all the medical addiction information . . . .still, we saw her in a car with 2 other girls and the driver was smoking. I think this is a form of anorexia . . .. they smoke to control their weight.
I cannot believe that my child is smoking . . . I won't let a cigarette near our home but I'm sure she does it at school. (Lunch, etc.).
My own mother is so wrinkled it is actually kind of hideous . . . . she is a life-long smoker and two packs a day.
This is so frustrating for me . . . .:hdvwl:
I've mentioned this in another thread regarding nurses and smoking (there are many here) that I worked with a male nurse in his 60's who looked like "Pig Pen" in Peanuts . . the kid with the dust cloud around him. His hair was gray but yellowed. His teeth were yellow. His lab coat was yellowed. The air around him was yellow. He reeked. It was awful.
steph
Steph, I'm sorry your girl has been smoking. Truly, I am,as if my own kiddos did it, I would hate it. It's very much a "do as I say and not as I do thing!"
Right now, I'm not worried as the 3 of them hate that I smoke..but then again, I hated that my oldies smoked. So, I'm worried that in the future, they may try it and be hooked. With kiddos, we can never say never, and the worry remains.
If life were simple, temptation would never be placed in the way of those of a weak will!!!!..(eg that would be me)
Oh and the wrinkled hideous thing..I KNOW that is a fact, I so doont wanna be wrinkled and hideous and smelly....have avoided it thus far, but if I keep goin, may one day be that crinckley stinky yellow thingy. Food for thought
:cheers:I understand that smoking causes cancer and it is terrible for your cardio and everybody needs to quit that does it. Rarely do I hear about drinking alcohol and the dangers and the stigma attached to it. Lets outlaw alcohol in the bars. Lets give the country clubs that serve alcohol a makeover and all the food chains that serve alcohol where people drive away and kill someone in a car accident or the lives that have been runied from drunk parents. Lets just not leave anyone out now.
"Smoking is bad for you!!" -said the 5'4" 250lb nurse drinking her 3rd coca-cola of the evening.
That's why I won't make any health habit judgments. I'm the last person with a right to comment on someones else's "fix". I eat when I'm sad, bored, nervous, happy and by golly it shows. I have a pretty good idea of how hard it is to quit smoking. I'm addicted to carbs.
RE: The smoking daughter. I posted some links that have some great ways to approach it. I think it is on my post on page 2 of this thread.
Also go to wowio.com and do a search for smoking- there are several books you can download for free and they are good. I am reading them now in hopes of receiving some help with my addiction. Also bombard her with anti smoking stuff! Get pamphlets, info, ANYTHING and put them on her bed or door every single day!! Get some graphic photos of ppl dying of smoking and also of cancerous lungs. Keep it up and dont give up on her!!!

I too am a smoker that has been beating my head against a brick wall trying to find ways to quit. I like this idea and am going to try it. I have been smoking for over 20 years, worse part is, I am in my uh hem late 30's, been smoking for more than half of my life.
As far as the non smokers judging us smokers, it really isn't fair for you to judge ANYONE. What right do you have? Nobody is perfect and if you think you are perfect enough to judge others, you are sadly mistaken. Supporting those that are trying to quit is much more effective than judging and putting us down. Try to be more sympathetic and supportive, you will actually feel better about yourself. Those who are overweight ENJOY the taste of the chocolate cake and greasy french fries that add pounds to their rear end (among other places), we all have our demons. Have compassion and don't judge, it makes you just as smelly as we smokers are.
I personally have NO excuses for why I smoke. I make that choice. Personally, I like to smoke. I like the way it feels when the smoke hits my throat. That may be one of the reasons I have had a hard time quitting, it is something I enjoy. I do not however enjoy hacking up half of my lungs (figure of speech), nor do I enjoy stinking or having a smelly truck. But the act of smoking, I do enjoy.
Sorry, just get tired of judgemental people.:angryfire
