Just wondering if any of you gals wear skirts to work. If so, do you have any special reasoning behind it? Comfort....religious belief....?

:clown: It would be interesting to find out how many online users wear skirts...or dresses.

one of the girls in my nursing school class wears skirts - she is Orthodox Jewish

Specializes in ER, ICU.

I wear a kilt sometimes, but not to work.

I do not wear a skirt. I am a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, so skirts really aren't my thing lol.

I have seen a few people wear skirts where I use to work, one was a CNA who always wore a skirt, it looked like it was made of the same material as scrubs, and it matched her scrub top. I also noticed a charge nurse that always wore a skirt. It looks so "old-fashioned" to me, but hey, to each their own!

I wear skirts outside of work for religious reasons (no particular denomination, but if I HAD to label myself it would be Mennonite) I have yet to find scrub skirts in my neck of the woods, so I just wear looser scrubs that aren't low rise or ultra form fitting. We have a lot of PCA's who are Muslim who wear skirts- I've meant to ask them where they find their skirts, because they look like they're scrub material. Oddly enough, the Muslim RN's I've seen (all 3 of them so far) wear scrub pants. I got away with wearing a skirt through clinical though. Not hard to find a white skirt.

Do nurses wear pants to appear more gender neutral?

I always wonder if you are jumping on the bed to do CPR on the fly somewhere, a skirt or dress can't be that comfortable anymore. It's not like you can ride side saddle on the bed when it's an adult... So basically you'd show your underwear to all the people you pass... The many times I did it my pants would even ride down a bit in all the action and my boxers would show for everyone to see.

i wore polo shirts with the state hospital name embroidered on it on top paired with docker-style pants on the bottom.

the colors were tan and navy and the polos and pants could be either color. you could wear one of each color or both

pieces could be navy or tan (which i thought made me look like a gas or electric company meter reader.) that way, the

woman who wanted to wear skirts for whatever reason could easily do it. most wore twill a-line longer length skirts like

i wore back in the sixties. most of us wore wild-colored socks and athletic shoes, but some still wore stockings or panty-

hose with some kind of nursing shoe.

i don't care how long my skirt might be -- if i had worn a skirt to work, i'd have been arrested for indecent exposure

in fairly short order!

i have never thought of a nurse wearing a skirt as being "weird" because i grew up around and have lived among and

worked with far too many apostolic, mennonite, old order amish, muslim, orthodox jewish etc. women.

Do nurses wear pants to appear more gender neutral?

Move to slacks/pants was gradual but became almost total once hospitals began changing dress codes to allow nursing "whites" that included pants or pant-suits.

Gender neutral came to the fore as via court decisions and legal statues employer dress codes had to be "gender neutral". That is an employer or place of higher education could not require females to only wear dresses/skirts. If a dress code does mandate such then it must go across the board, i.e. males as well.

If you look at various uniforms from before the 1970's or 1980's policewomen, jail matrons, meter-maids, airline hostesses even IIRC in the military all wore skirts. There simply wasn't a "dress" or another sort of uniform that had pants.

It wasn't only nurses, but female doctors were also requried in many facilites (at least interns and residents) to wear skirts (usually white).

As noted in many other posts the practice of modern nursing at least in most facilities is too physically demanding for any sort of restrictive uniform. I mean "action back" or not, many old school nurse's uniform dresses left much to be desired in terms of range of motion. Oh and lord help you if you were a "healthy" girl. One good breath and you could pop a button or zipper.

Then there is of course if one does have a good figure a well fitted uniform dress may look great in a magazine advert, but often brought out the "perv" brigade the minute one stepped out the door. From old geezers and smart mouths clutching their chests and yelling "I need a nurse!" or "nursey, nursey I need an angel of mercy", to patients and male staff members with "hand problems".

Well then your mind would really reel at the thought of a mini-skirted nurse jumping up to do the job! *LOL*

During the 1960's and 1970's following the then current fashion trends uniform makers did bring out lines of nurse's dresses that if one bent over or reached high enough the entire world was your GYN.

i believe there are 2 season nurses in their 60's that wear skirts in the facility where i work. in addition, they are the only ones that still wear their nursing caps, and their classic white uniforms, they are in management; and are highly regarded in the facility.
