Coffee Addiction
I cannot make it through the day without at least 2-3 caffeinated drinks whether it be coffee, Rockstar, etc.

Pt refusals
I helped care for a pt post liver tx. He did absolutely NOTHING to help himself. Refused to get up, try to walk, and fought to keep his foley in, etc. I know this is incredibly mean, but everytime I went in there all I could think was "what a waste of a liver!"

skirts
I do not wear a skirt. I am a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, so skirts really aren't my thing lol. I have seen a few people wear skirts where I use to work, one was a CNA who always wore a skirt, it looked like it was made of the same material as scrubs, and it matched her scrub top. I also noticed a charge nurse that always wore a skirt. It looks so "old-fashioned" to me, but hey, to each their own!

Dealing with nosy family members.
It seriously boggles my mind. I couldn't imagine just wondering around an ER looking to see what other patient's are doing. I don't get why people think it's ok to do that. Whenever we get an ambulance in, it always gets people's attention. Without fail there is a family member of someone out of the room listening to what is going on, report, etc. It drives me CRAZY!!!!! The thing that gets me is that I am the only one that seems to be bothered by this. Since no one else seems to give a ****, I feel awkward saying something. I like this though: Mar 22 by cstatic Could you say something along the lines of "For the privacy and safety of other patients guests must return to the waiting area when they are not in-room with their family member" It's right .... and give directions.... :-) Would that be allowed? It is polite yet to the point :)

Would you feel ok as a patient at your own hospital?
I would definitely recommend anyone/everyone I know to go to my hospital. The nurses and docs are great, they teach me something new pretty much everyday. It would depend on what was wrong with me if I would go in or not. Laceration, broken bone, etc. I would definitely go in. Something more probably not. I wouldn't want my co-workers seeing anything too "personal" lol.

Advice - I'll need a meal tray too
The meal tray thing always drives me crazy. Especially when people get discharged and then ask if they can have a sandwich and soda for the drive home. Uhhh no, I don't think so. The other thing that drives me crazy is the bathroom. I don't know what it is but for some reason whenever people get to the hospital suddenly they can't go to the bathroom or clean themselves up on their own. Obviously there are some who really can't, but there are others who can definitely take care of it on their own. I always ask them "So.... how do you go to the bathroom at home?" It's funny because 99% of the time it takes them a few seconds to respond because they are trying to think of something!

Dealing with nosy family members.
I work in the ER and it seems like patient's family members are always wondering around curious about what's going on with everyone else. They walk around and look into other patients rooms, listen to report from medics/fire, and are especially curious when we get a drunk or out of control patient. How can I deal with this without sounding rude? It's a violation of privacy as well as incredibly annoying!

Getting a masters or NP w/o working as an RN first!
I don't think they're doing that, but they are both entering these programs without prior nursing experience. It amazes me that this is even possible!

how to give insulin injection?
If no one else is complaining I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are some patient's where pretty much anything you do seems to hurts them!

Getting a masters or NP w/o working as an RN first!
Two friends of mine are doing this exact thing. One is currently working on her Masters in Nursing, her bachelor's is a health science degree and apparently you can get your RN in this masters program. She is not currently a nurse, and has zero experience in healthcare. I really don't understand this, how on earth can anyone know they want a masters degree in something without ever doing it first! Another friend of mine has decided that she is going to be an NP, she too has a bachelor's degree in health science, but is not currently an RN and has never worked in healthcare. A few co-workers and I were discussing this today and it seems to be becoming more and more common. It really just blows my mind.

which shift 3pm-3:30 AM or 11AM-11:00PM
Where I work we have an 11am-11pm as well as a 3pm-3am shift. It's called mid-shift, working in the ER these can be the busiest times so these shifts make sense. I work 11 to 11 and I love it.

Need your advice, full time to "dream" per diem position
Thanks everyone! The benefits aren't a concern, we will be using my husband's benefits so we're covered there. I like the idea of going per diem at my current job, unfortunately I don't know if it would be worth it! Due to the drive and everything it would pretty much pay for gas and lunch lol. Yeah they really made it sound like it would be no problem getting my hours in, it's just a scary thing going from something that is secure to this.

Need your advice, full time to "dream" per diem position
Thanks! Yeah he did talk about hiring me on full-time as soon as he could. They said I'm sort of a "guinea pig" as they haven't had this type of position from the ED before. I think I may try to hold on to my full time position as long as possible, just to be safe and give myself some peace of mind.

Need your advice, full time to "dream" per diem position
Let me give you a little background first. I'm currently working as a PCT for a very well known hospital in my area. I am not a big fan of the floor I work on, very heavy patients, working nights, and a very high turn-over rate for nurses and techs. Also, it takes me 45 minutes to drive to work. I was recently offered a job at a smaller hospital 5 minutes from my house as an ED Tech. The ED is where I have always wanted to work, and I would be able to do more skills than I am able to now. The shift would be 1pm-1am which would work out perfectly for me and my family. The pay is also more than what I make now. The only thing is that it would be a per diem job. I would report directly to the ED director, and during the interview he told me that I should have no problem getting full time hours, and that I would be able to float around the hospital as well. They would use me as a unit secretary/ED Tech/SWAT tech. I'm nervous about leaving my current job since it is guaranteed full time. What would you do? I so badly want to take their word that they can get me full time hours, but obviously no one can predict the future. I'm just concerned about low census and only being able to pick up a few shifts a month. Anyone been in a similar situation?

Scrubs - what do you wear?
Hospital uniform scrubs. As a PCT I have to wear ciel blue, they gave us a couple different styles of Cherokee scrubs we could buy. We did have to purchase them ourselves.
