SJSU FALL 2021 BSN

Published

Hey Guy! I am creating this for those applying to SJSU Fall 2021 nursing program. I wanted to see what the applicant pool looks like! Here's my stats so far:

Big 5 GPA: 4.0

TEAS: 80%

Impaction score: 6.66

I don't feel so confident due to how competitive it's been :/

I was feeling more confident before reading all these comments! My big 8 GPA is 3.9, was 4.0 for big 5, wish they hadn't changed that... as well as removing credit for healthcare experience.. I've been a full time CMA for over two years so that would have been nice! Oh well.

My TEAS score is 88.7 so my total impaction is 6.86. I can't afford to take the TEAS twice nor do I have the time... so I am hoping this will be competitive enough. I was overlooking a thread from last year and someone with essentially the same score as me got in, so I'm hopeful that this year will be similar. Fingers crossed!

Have you read through previous semester threads and looked at the metrics of other people who have got in?

Hey guys I was about to submit my nursing application when I noticed this. It says, "Courses count as the SJSU equivalent unit disbursement, regardless of where the course was taken. The applicant's scores are calculated as noted on student's transcripts." Does this mean that if I took a 5 unit Chemistry class it only counts as three units when calculating my GPA since SJSU only has a 3 unit Chemistry class. Kinda worried because this changes my impaction score and I can't find this information anywhere besides on the nursingcas application.

Hmm, I took a 4 unit micro class and got a B. I submitted a substitution form for the 5 unit class they require. My calculated GPA was 3.8 per my own calculations, but they gave me 3.74 on the supplemental app calculation. Im inclined to think your grade will be calculated off of 5 units, not three. Id suggest emailing Jennifer at the nursing department.

omfgg 519 people have applied for fall 2021. This is going to be a blood bath ?

I think this is the # of people who have applied through CalState apply for SJSU and listed their intention to apply for nursing. I know that in a previous year’s thread on allnurses that 360 people completed their nursing apps and only like 150 were actually qualified— my understanding is that a lot of people give it their best shot even when they don’t meet requirements. All in all, it’ll definitely be rigorous competition but I took this email to mean that they really don’t want extra, unqualified, nursing applications to sort through so the message is “please don’t bother”.

anyway, that’s just my take ?

Since the email said that many people had “opened an application,” I understood it as that was the amount of people who have began an application on NursingCAS whether it’s been submitted or not - including those who haven’t even applied to SJSU in the fall and other disqualified applicants. That was just my interpretation though! It was certainly a little discouraging...

@Lone_purple @carlierose4 Hmm, yeah OK that seems pretty reasonable. Though, I did think the find another career line was pretty disheartening. Probably could have gotten away with find another school lmao.

Though, I was trying to do the math on my application because I've been freaking out about this. The supplemental app I submitted on oneSJSU gave me a 3.74 GPA, but I've got 7/8 As and just the B in micro. By any other calculator thats a 3.84? Im wondering if Im missing something?

I guess the group advising tomorrow would be a good place for answers tho

Hey yall,

GPA for Big 8: 3.86

TEAS: 95.3%

Impaction: 7.04 (I think? GPA + TEAS/30)

Does anyone know if micro would count as 4 or 5 units for SJSU if I took it at another school that counts it as 4? Every email reply I get from the nursing director is always unclear or doesn't answer my questions completely. ?

I think it’s whatever units it is at SJSU. I’d look at the GPA from your supplemental application, because mine on there is different than it would be at my college.

You need to submit a substitution form if its 4 units, and it has to have a lab! I was in the same situation and had luck getting through to the program coordinator

Well, this was my communication with someone at the nursing dept regarding my 4 unit micro vs 5 unit micro. At the advising meeting now tho, Susan is making it seem like its not a big deal. They're going to post the advising recording on the website tomorrow if you arent in it now

"It sounds like you just need to submit a course substitution form and submit to the email indicated on the form. The undergraduate coordinator will approve (or deny) and send it back to you. When you are submitting your application on NursingCAS be sure to upload any approved substitution forms so they are counted for your prerequisites.

Let me know if you have any other questions."

Just so everyone knows, at the advising session. They confirmed that the way that impaction score is calculated is not GPA + (TEAS/30). They actually apparently have no idea how the score is calculated.
