Simmons College FNP March 2014 cohort

Published

I just found out today I was accepted into the full time March 2014 cohort. I wanted to see if anyone else on Allnurses would be attending Simmons in March...or any other cohort feel free to post...with me! I also joined the facebook page as well. Looking forward to this new adventure next year!

Specializes in Home Health, Podiatry, Neurology, Case Mgmt.

I was a CNA, then LPN, AAS RN, and now BSN RN...I feel like the step by step approach really gave me a good handle on all aspects of nursing. I would still be an LPN right now if not for EC, and I too would have stayed with EC if they offered an NP route! =)

Specializes in Med-Surg, Ortho, Subacute, Homecare, LTC.

Hey Tasha how long did your bsn through Excelsior take? I'm coming to the end of my asn right now and was looking to head in the np direction myself. Thanks.

I know for me, having to go through all the different levels of nursing it's giving me a well rounded aspect and respect for each position. Like many life and family obligations is why I didn't go the traditional BSN route.

I agree with both of you. I have so much respect for each and every one of these professions having once been in their shoes. Yeah its taking (what feels like) an eternity to reach my goal, but I truly believe it has made me a better nurse. I learned so much at each of these levels. I know a lot of people want to do away with the various avenues of becoming a nurse believing it takes away from our profession, but the three of us (and the countless others who have traveled similar paths) are prime examples of why this is a good thing. My first RN position was not nearly as stressful for me as it would have been had I not already had five years of LPN experience under my belt. I know that being an NP is a whole different animal, but I still think the experiences I have had over the years will help me when transitioning into this role as well.

I did it part-time to 3/4 time, (2-4 classes each 16wk term) and it took me 18mo total. Had I planned better it would have only taken 12 mo, but I didn't realize that i couldn't take my final capstone course until all nursing classes were done, i thought EVERYTHING including some of the gen eds had to be done too, so it messed me up. I was actually done with everything in August, but didn't start capstone til september.

Anyone else in the March 2014 cohort for Simmons? Feeling a bit lonely here on the boards LOL!

Hey Tasha,

I received an email yesterday that my application is complete. Anxiously waiting for the March cohort. How long did you wait once your apps were in?

i applied November 4th and received an email on November 8th that my app was complete. I applied for the march cohert. I'm going on to week 11 now and still have not heard. People above heard a lot sooner then I have and applied much later than I did.

Oh wow.

Have you attempted to email them as to why it's taking so long? What were your credentials if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Tasha,

I might be applying, but probably for the May cohort. Make sure you share your experience with us since Simmons is so new and no one knows much about it. Have you received a book list or syllabus yet? I'd love to know about that!

Yup, I have. Never a really good answer, haha. They stated Holidays and snow days" but why have others been reviewed and accepted? This wait is SO Hard. I had maybe a 3.1 in my Associates RN. (Dont know exact GPA because that includes classes I took at the school that had nothing to do with my nursing degree as well). I had a 3.9 for my BSN. I am pretty sure at least a b/b+ average in all my sciences that are fairly up to date. I had either a c+ or b- in statistics. I have been an RN for 2.5 years, and only have experience in long term care and drug and alcohol detox, but Simmons says experience really isn't a factor.

I haven't talked to --- recently, my friend called him on Wed to check on her app and her's has been in the 2nd review as well for awhile. Think she is going on 4-5 wks now I believe all her stuff was turned in the 1st or 2nd week of December. but she says if you take the days out they closed her's has only been reviewed for a week or two. I'm sure it will pick up a bit faster now as the cut off for March cohort applications is Feb 7th so I"m sure they will process them through faster as they won't be looking at other apps.
