This morning on the way home from work I saw something that made me go "Why Tan Fox?" and laugh rather hard. Granted, it was probably the post-night shift delirium that made me totally lose it laughing, but I still think it was odd. The car in front of me had a well-made sign in the rear window that said "XY BSN RN" where x y = presumably the driver's initials. I was befuddled as to why someone would do that. Some of my friends have various humorous nursing-related bumper stickers, but nothing as seemingly umm boastful as that. Now I must confess I couldn't see the rest of the car. It could've had company logos on the side or whatever, but my perception was that this was a personal car.
I could see the point of advertising for your services or agency, but that would require that you provide some sort of contact information (website, phone number, etc.). The only other explanation that I could come up with is that this nurse does hospice/home health and is trying to get people to not mess with the car. Still, do people who would mess with the car know that a BSN is a degree for nurses? If I were to do that I'd have a temporary sign (like the pizza places) that said something like "Home health nurse" as appropriate for the nature of my work.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Would you put a similar sign on your car?
P.S. If it's your car I have nothing against you and am just confused as to what the purpose is. And thank you for driving well and fast.

I'd give nurses a bad name if I did that...

Yeah, no. I would never put anything on my car indicating that I'm a nurse.

Ha! that's funny. I like the idea of vanity plates, but a homemade sign? That's a bit ridiculous. I know all the hard work it took to get to that point but that's a little much.

I wouldn't choose to do it but people are different. The fact that it was a sign, though, seems a little weird. I might even be able to accept it more if it was a license plate but a sign--weird. I'm like "Who cares that you're a nurse?"

I would interpret that sign plate as "male, BSN, RN"
and having specialty plates or signs like that announcing your profession (I've seen laywer, and MD ones before) is kind of lame, IMO. Who really cares? That and I wouldn't want anyone soliciting my services off the clock as some surely would after an announcement such as that.

I agree with you! the first thing I thought of XY it being a male. Clever I must say. I wouldn't run off judging the guy. Maybe it was a joke, or maybe he just graduated and his little niece made him a sign. There are many possibilities, and solutions to this question. over all maybe the guy is just damn proud to have earned his degree finally and he was coming back from his licensing exam, or just found out and he is happy. Be happy for the dude. I wish I have seen more people being excited about becoming nurses rather than go in for it for the money.
Well that is just my 2 cents.

Once I saw a license plate that said RN-TRMA.... I couldn't help but think... bad ass!! hehehe
The letters weren't XY, they were **. I just substituted XY instead of the the actual initials.

YUp Is about vanity....but why a nurse need to be vanitous????
Now my dear american friends explain to Zuzi this socio-cultural "vanity" background....
Why is vanity in american nursing?

I take it as a male nurse shouting out to the world, "Yeah, I am a male nurse and loving it, SO WHAT?" kinda thing. He has probably heard the "You're a male nurse tee hee hee" jokes one too many times. I think he wants to show that he is a male nurse and proud, unlike some male nurses I have come across who have been a little shy about explaining why they choose nursing as a career to their family, friends, and social circles. I figure more power to him for being "out" and proud!!

Maybe it's a new grad looking for a job. That's a creative way to spark conversation with potential employers I guess as long as you remember not to drive wrecklessly.
I have a Jesus bumper sticker to help me control my road rage. When I get angry at another driver, it helps me to remember that I'm representing Jesus and to always think, "WWJD?"
