Hello all, I am currently halfway through my ADN program in Tampa. Since August, I have been working at a community hospital as a nurse tech. I have been offered a nurse externship position on my unit (progressive care) starting this May. I enjoy working there and the staff is friendly albeit it is hard, hard work. I have recently been contacted by the Level I trauma center here in regards to a nurse tech position as well. My interest lies in critical care nursing, so the Level I facility attracts my attention greatly. However, I am pretty certain I can land an RN job out of school on my unit. I am afraid if I leave for the Level I that I may not be able to line up a job there post-graduation. Any advice?

Personally.... I would not make any moves to any new position until I was finished with school. First because a new position would cause a lot of extra stress you dont need right now while you are in school. Secondly you already have time working where you are and if you know you will get a position there you should stay. You are not certain on how things work at the other place and might not get the same treatment elsewhere. I would stay where you are at least untill you get a year of RN experience under your belt.

PCU is considered critical care in most areas. Most trauma centers do not hire new grads so the experience in PCU may help you get a TC position after you have been an RN for 1 or more years.

Tough call. You know all about the jobe you have, might hate the job at the level 1 trauma center. Stay with the devil you know or risk the devil you don't know? You have to decide what's right for you. As for me, I'll stay with a job I enjoy. Opportunities, money, charisma, whatever else is offered are useless if I go to another job and hate it.

What kind of unit have you been offered a job on from the new facility? I agree with the others though, I would probably stay put. Progressive care would be a pretty easy transfer to ICU after about a year. I have 10 months of progressive care experience and just got a job in the CVICU. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice everyone, you helped shed some light on the appropriate choice. :bigcandle:
Jen, I have not been offered a specific unit yet. They told me I was high on the waiting list and would be called when a manager request NT applicants. Congrats on the CVICU, that's actually one of my top choices of units I'd like to work in. The hospital I'm at has a heart institute right nextdoor.
