Hi I am new nurse and will be starting my job this Oct...At hopkins in Peds... Question is I am buying scrub, but not sure what shoes, 12 hour days I want to get something that people think really are the best shoes they have used. So any suggestions??? Greatly appreciated...
I will toss in my two cents...
In nursing school I wore New Balance tennis shoes and I thought they did fine. My last clinical rotation was in OR and my preceptor (a nurse of many years) swore on Birkenstock clogs. She was a good teacher, so I valued her opinion and bought a pair when I graduated (as a present for myself).
They took a while to break in. I made the mistake of wearing them for the first time for a full 12 hour shift. Later I was told by my co-workers that you should wear them in slowly (2 hours one day, 4 hours the next, etc). It turned out my foot did not fit the clog correctly and I needed an extra layer of cork put in. To cut the story short, I love my Birkenstock clogs and would recommend them to anyone! :)
I own 3 pairs of Dansko clogs, two are older pairs and I just got the white pair when I graduated. I go for walks in my clogs and never have any problems, and my white ones are the ones with the optional heel strap, which my first day of work, I wore around my heels. At the end of my shift, I had some pain in my baby toes because the strap was pushing my feet too far forward. Needless to say, I put the strap up on the instep and I have never had any more problems with them. If you plan to get clogs, try breaking them in for shorter amounts of time than an entire shift. Or bring another pair to change into.

It's nice to hear the explanation for why dansko's work- I had never thought of the rocking motion before! But those hard, expensive clogs are what it takes to get me through 12 hours pain-free. I wear my strap ones (strap outta the way now, it catches on chairs.... get up and chair go boom!) to work, and wore the clog ones to disney world. Both work fine, but yeah, the strap can push your toesies too far in. I worried that I'd have them come off my feet with the strap up but so far, I've run in them that way, and they stayed on.

I found this great thing called "Z-Spring" at a trade show last year, while I was still in Nursing school. I have had really bad heel pain for I don't know how long, and this just took it away completely.
But........not everybody can wear them......my wife had to return hers cause they hurt her feet, but I love mone, and now that I am working as a nurse, everybody wants to know about my shoes.
Thing is....you need to try whatever works for you.....your feet are your livelihood, take care of them.
I bought Dansko clogs from http://www.lydiasuniforms.com and they are very comfortable so far. They are abit more expensive though. The ones I bought were $104.00 plus tax. I also have Rockers Durolight Ultra Clogs from http://www.jascouniform.com and they are $24.99 plus tax.

I have three pairs of dansko clogs, and i love them. i've tried wearing my new balance trail runners to work, but i end up with pain in my calves. it's such a personal thing- some people have great results from birkenstocks, others (like me) end up with back pain. dansko clogs are HARD...they're really not for everyone, but for me, I get to the end of my shift with NO pain at all.
someone mentioned compression socks...great idea. i had surgery last year and ended up going home with TED hose, and if i'm having a long stretch of work days in a row, I'll sometimes wear those, as my legs and feet will eventually swell after three or four days on my feet. they're not cheap- none of the brands are, really- but totally worth it.
never skimp on footwear for working as a hospital nurse. i know people who did in school, and they were barely able to walk at the end of the day once they moved to 12 hour shifts.
good luck at hopkins! heard their peds area is fantastic!
