I'm a sexless nurse
This is all a bit funny to me and I apologize if I offend anyone by laughing. There is only one male nurse on the day shift on my unit and basically it's the culture on my unit that us nurses work as a team. We are all around the same age and so we act as if all 30 patients belong to all of us even though we have our 5 that we are assigned to. If someone is having trouble starting a HepLock and someone else has a few seconds and doesn't mind giving it a try, they'll go start it. We all know how to do it. I personally do not like inserting foleys on females because (to be honest I don't like the smell of the betadine when I put it down there) plus I don't like to guess if I'm in the right orifice. But I'll start it on a male patient in a heart beat for obvious reasons, lol. Also, we have a female nurse who is an open lesbian and she is always ready and willing to start a foley on females so of course we call her if we don't feel like doing it. I said all that to say, just try to work as a team guys, try not to be so hard on each other. The job is stressful enough.

I give up.. Failed Aanp three times
I'm so sorry to hear this. Please don't beat up on yourself too much and definitely do not give up. You can't, you've come too far, made too many sacrifices and if other people have done it, why can't you? Why don't you try practicing questions in your weak areas, you know what they are. If strategy is your problem then try practicing better test taking strategies. I hate taking tests too, damn near gives me anxiety, makes me almost want to throw up. I think I must have passed that FNP cert. exam by 3 points, who cares? Just get it over with. You got this.

What's the meanest thing a patient has said to you?
OMG! I am traumatized just reading this. Why wasn't there a security guard with her? Better yet, why wasn't she transferred to a Psych facility. A regular nurse is not trained to deal with demon possessed patients. After the Pepsi assault, I would have been in ER getting evaluated because I would need a week off after that because of the physical and emotional distress. That patient is endangering the safety of the staff! It's an unsafe environment! Nope, couldn't do it, I'm not that big of a person.

What's the meanest thing a patient has said to you?
Told me I reminded her of her house keeper after asking me what my ethnicity was. I was born on the island of Jamaica but grew up in NYC but because her housekeeper is Jamaican then automatically I must be a housekeeper as well. This happened a few months ago.

Do DNPs get compensated more
Like my colleagues already mentioned, it depends on where you work unfortunately. Some employers will give you a pay raise for the DNP degree and others won't. I work in a single physician practice, it's just me, him and two PA's and he has made it clear on numerous occasions that he cannot afford to pay us anymore than he is already paying us. Why I stay there you might ask? It's convenient at the moment and it fits my agenda, lol.

Black and Job Hunting
I agree, I live and work in NYC also and it's the other way around I think. My unit only has 1 Caucasian nurse and he is on the day shift, there are no Caucasians on the night shift. The rest of the nurses range from Filipinos , Caribbeans, Africans and Indians, oh and there is one Chinese nurse on day shift.

When did it become OK to treat your nurse like poo?
I work on a Med/Surg/Tele unit so our patients are very colorful. Also, let me remind you it's a kosher Jewish facility as well. I had this patient the other day who was insisting on me getting him a grilled cheese sandwich (remember, kosher). I called the kitchen and finally after some coaxing they agreed to make it so I sent a CNA to go get it. She arrived with it and low and behold, the bread was on one side of the plate and the melted cheese on the other, he freaked the hell out and made me throw it in the garbage. Can anyone believe this?

for those who work 12 hour shifts, how long is your lunch break?
We get 1 hour unpaid for lunch and two 30 mins breaks but we normally don't take the last 30 mins. We only take 30 mins for breakfast in the morning and the hour lunch. You can always get paid for the hour lunch break if you were too busy to take it. I normally take the first 30 mins at 10:30 am and my lunch at 3:00 pm because I work 7 am to 7:30 pm.

Areas of nursing you would NOT like?
I am by no means interested in Psych, OB/GYN, any of the ICUs and definitely not Home Care because I hate going into people's homes. I'll deal with them in my turf.

When did it become OK to treat your nurse like poo?
I love that, I think our hospitals here in the US should adopt some of those traits from the UK when it comes to "waiting on" on some of these patients. Sometimes I feel like a glorified maid and I don't remember going to school to become a maid. Some of these patients can get borderline abusive if you let them. This is why we have to set limits but unfortunately I am too nice to do that.

Nurse Practitioner School
Well said BostonFNP, you verbalized perfectly everything I had a hard time stating in another forum. Thank you.

Given a do over, which (feasible) career would you pursue?
Forensic Scientist

Recent DNP-FNP graduate, interviews approaching and pregnant. Advice?
I guess that makes sense because the DNP program I'm in allows the Adult NP to take Peds courses in order to complete the FNP requirement and at the end, get their DNP Diploma.

Are FNP salaries in family practice really this low?
Hahaha!
