Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

Hi!!! So I will be graduating in 2 weeks and have been wearing nursing shoes the past few years but my feet just ache at the end of the day. Anyone know of good shoes, I feel like its worth an investment if they really will make a difference..thanks in advance!

I 2nd the Alegrias! I loved the Danskos for a while and then started having problems with my ankle...switched to Alegria and won't go back!

I hear Danskos can hurt your feet when you first get them but once you break them in they are great. I am hoping to get a pair when I graduate but until then I will stick with the pair I have now. They are pretty comfy and dirt cheap!

Yes, Danskos do have a break-in period....the time just depends. I have owned three different pairs of Danskos. The first pair I ever bought was the Professional style in black leather. Honestly took me about a month to get used to them.

My second pair was actually a used pair of Professionals in a different color. It took me no time to break those in, and it could be because I was used to my other Danskos or perhaps the "breaking in" was already done for me :)

My most recent purchase was a pair of the Dansko XPs, which are like The Professional line but they have a softer, squishier insole. Honestly, the shoe is rubbing the sides of my foot more than anything so that is taking some time to break in, but it's only been a few weeks.

OP, if you're thinking about purchasing a pair of Danskos, wear them around the house to help break them in. When you bring them to work, bring another pair of shoes with you just in case.

Regarding the Alegria shoes, I had no break in period with those.

Thank you everryone for your comments!!! I'm kind of torn between getting Merrels or Danskos.. I have a pair of Merrels that I wear at home that I love but have heard so much about Dansko's I think I might try them. I also have a relative that sells them at her store and can get me a discount but it still seems to be quite the investment. Maybe a gift to myself when I pass NCLEX (hopefully:) or when I get my first nursing job :)

I've tried them all, and like nurse mates the best.

I have a wide foot, and they com in wide widths.

My feet and legs never hurt with them.

I've always had problems with my feet. I like Skechers clogs and Dansko clogs for work. I brought extra shoes to work with me while breaking the Danskos in, got tired of it, and didn't wear them again till my Skechers got ruined during a code. Now I wear the Danskos all the time and love them. My feet (wide font, high arches) never hurt. I bought both pairs of shoes after A long shift at work when my feet were swollen and sore so I'd be sure they would still be comfy at the end of a long day.

I think the actual brand of nursing shoe really does not matter one whit. At the end of the day, quite literally, what you want is a shoe and insole combination that will not allow your feet to pronate even when they're very tired. Once your feet are allowed to pronate, that will place additional stress on your lower leg muscles, the inside of your knees, additional stress on your hips and pass that stress onto your back.

Some shoe brands are made specifically for feet that pronate, so they have additional arch support built into them. Some shoe brands are made for ankles that are already in a neutral alignment. Some shoe brands are made for feet that supinate and need to be brought back into a neutral alignment from that position. There insults that can be added tissues that will also help with those conditions.I think the actual brand of nursing shoe really does not matter one whit. I love my Danskos. I had sketchers in nursing school. At the end of the day my feet, back, and knees would be screaming in pain. Not with the Danskos. I also wear nursemates compression socks to work. I think they make a big difference too.

Sorry about that, I was dictating my text and didn't catch the mistakes until well after the edit time had passed. Once you have found the shoe/insole design that will support your feet, then you need to find the shoes that are comfortable to wear. There's lots of shoes out there... so there WILL be a shoe that will work for you.

I bought a pair of Danskos in nursing school and they were so tight around the top of my foot I returned them. Since I bought them from Nordstoms, it was no problem to return them, even after I obviously had worn them several times!

Recently I tried Danskos again, and went back to Nordstroms (just in case). The person helping me said that all Danskos are hand-stitched and thus the same size can have different fits. She brought out 3 of the same size and style, and only one pair really fit my feet! If you decide to go with Danskos, keep that in mind.
