Shoes for Nursing School!

Hi everyone!

I was just admitted into a traditional BSN program in Sacramento. We were given a pre-entry checklist with a lot of items to tackle in a short amount of time!

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on shoes for Nursing school and clinicals? They've instructed us to to purchase comfortable shoes that are closed-toe, closed-heal, solid black or solid white (with minimal other colors), and they must be "wipable", meaning all leather and spill-proof. I had always imagined I would wear my black Nike Free Runs as they are super comfortable! However, they may have too much mesh on them to be considered spill-proof. I'm not really into the clog-looking shoes, I think they are called Dansko's? I would really prefer some comfy running shoes, if possible, but am having trouble finding leather ones that would be comfortable. Any suggestions what all of you fellow nurses like to wear?

I have black Nike shox that I love and they are approved. They do have mesh on them just ask your instructor. I asked mine and I haven't started yet but wanted the high price shoe for both clinicals and everyday wear. I didn't wanna buy two pair :-)

I bought Reebok shoes and they were very uncomfortable. They were flat looking though. Danskos aren't too bad if you get through the break in period with them and the way I look at it is that it's nursing school and not fashion school. I don't want to wear my shoes out and about and people love my colorful Danskos.

I don't recommend planning on using the same every day shoe outside of the hospital. There will be bugs and germs on them. I never take my shoes past the front door. I know people who strip inside their garage before they come in because of the bugs and germs.

I read on another thread that someone else wears Nike Shox for clinicals and loves them too! Thanks! I'll look more into getting some :) I think a small amount of mesh should be fine, it's a little difficult finding shoes that are 100% leather and solid-colored.

I tried a few different shoes (as in, bought, wore to clinicals, and returned), and ended up going with the Danskos. LOOOOVE them, and have so far one pair for going into practice (just graduated), with plans to get more. At least you can wear black, we had to get 100% white, so I have white Danskos that cost a pretty penny that I'll never wear! At least I was comfy in clinicals. :) Oh, and they're very easy to clean.

are there any stores that carry danskos or other nursing shoes or do you have to get them online?

I've heard Danskos are really comfy for your feet - non-slip and many different styles. You should be able to look up areas that carry it near you if you look it up on Google. I believe some DSWs carry it.

I have Danskos but recently purchased a pair of Timberland Renova Pro. While a clog style, they aren't loose like the Dansko (which are designed to flip/flop on your feet with a natural clog motion) and feel more like an athletic shoe to me. Dansko are *perfect* for long days standing, but if I'm walking quickly, I tend to roll an ankle at least once. If you're more coordinated than I am, they may work week. They're definitely easy to clean!

I also have a pair of Alegria Debra on order! Can't wait to try them on!

You don't want to wear the same shoes from clinicals anywhere else! That has been drilled in our heads since day one-the "yuck" from the floors of hospitals aren't what you want on your feet going anywhere else. I take my shoes off in the garage. :***: Mine are Landeau and they are pretty comfy, even after a 8-hour clinical day.
